...good speech though it was, it’s a shame that when the world so needs the Democrats to knock Trump off his perch they couldn’t come up with a more dynamic, fresh candidate.
Would you not think that the idea is "get the most palatable in and go from there"? Let's say Nazi Germany decided to do elections but a BUNCH didn't like how left a couple candidates were. Would you not think that getting Hitler out of office and progressing would be a MASSIVE boon to there instead of the alternative?

Didn’t they topple Berlin and tried to drag him out by the scruff of the neck until he saw his way out indefinitely?

I think the USA should you should go all the way with the analogy. Instead of a world where that didn’t happen and the people voted the Diet Nazi party.

...that sounds an extreme analogy.

i was just thinking the Democrats could have a more dynamic and fresh candidate than Biden. I seriously hope he wins, but I’d be a lot more confident if Obama was running.

Good lord, this is a rapid acceleration

Well yeah, but you don’t always get to run a once in a generation political talent (which Obama was, whether you agree with his policies/performance or not)

Also, I mean, it’s maybe SLIGHTLY extreme, but not really all THAT extreme at this point. Hitler didn’t start massacring the Jews on day 1, and by now, surely the fascist parallels of some of Trump’s actions and rhetoric are pretty much beyond debate?

What you get from the Democrats, a little bit like New Labour was the successional planning wasn't perhaps what it could have been.

This is what people don’t always seem to understand. You don’t ever end up with fascism all at once. You end up there in tiny incremental steps over the line that the overall populace doesn’t oppose because none of them are ever THAT much worse than what is already considered acceptable. It’s just like cooking the frog by slowly boiling the water around it as opposed to tossing it straight into boiling water.

For all it’s shortcomings, (of which there are many) right now I find myself very grateful for the two party system in this country. As long as there are basically only two realistic choices, it doesn’t provide a means for someone like Trump to hold onto power with only 30ish% of the voters holding a cult-like devotion to him. A wider appeal is necessary, and that might not be the case if there were 3 or 4 viable candidates. I’m pretty sure even Republicans can’t win elections on racism and bigotry alone.

I think if Trump gets absolutely destroyed in the election, it lessens the chances of someone similar reaching the same level of prominence.

Doesn’t ELIMINATE the threat, but reduces it

Yes fair point. The conditions from "below" will be strong, there's a latge layer of people now who will be lookign for another Trump figure. However tmhere are layers of Republicans who want their party back, and may well sell Trump down the river over coming weeks, particularly with a heavy defeat.

Oh if he gets beaten in November, there’ll be a stampede of Republicans trampling each other in an effort to distance themselves from Trump.

Thankfully it seems like there’s a good number of people (including even some groups on the Right) who aren’t going to let them forget.
