Warren eviscerating him on stage was a 2020 highlight (granted, not much competition)
the guy spent like three quarters of a billion dollars or something on his campaign and Warren ended it in 90 seconds

Did I mention that I love Elizabeth Warren?

The bit where she leaned over and whispered “don’t worry, it’ll all be over soon” into his ear was a little much though.

Who do you believe out of the 2020 primary field would have refused to have backed Sanders if he had won the nomination?

Possibly Bloomberg but that is the only one I can even think of and I think when it came to crunch he’d have just sat on the sidelines.

Well, I didn't say the 2020 primary field - I said the Democrat establishment. Bernie would have announced his progressive platform and you would have loads of people come out and say things like socialism / un-American / attacks on freedom / an American electorate cant/wont vote for this / we need a sane choice between these two extremists and the like.

Someone would have stood to represent "common sense", if not Bloomberg then someone like that. CNN and MSNBC would have boosted that person. Biden and Harris would probably have let everyone know how unhappy they were whilst backing Bernie as the candidate.

There's a world of difference between this and 'most of the established Democrats privately supporting Trump and some publicly'.
And if Democrats did react like you mention in this post, a lot of that would be down to Sanders who failed to build coalitions in the party, not down to his politics.

Look perhaps in "normal" times you'd have establishment Democrats jumping sides, if it were like a John McCain or John Kasich type. Someone with some shred of decency

In the current election, it's all about defeating the common enemy - Trump, someone who anyone that's not part of his fan club clearly understands needs to go to bed, so to speak. So this time around, even if it were Bernie, he'd clearly be better than the alternative (Trump).

The last few pages have been mad. Its all establishment did this and that but at the end off the day the majority of the voters that turned out voted for Biden.

Love him or hate him Biden had better support.. Sanders campaign team didn't do enough and given his reliance on the youth vote he was comfortably beaten. Well before the convention.

Seems to me the party didn't have to do a thing.

I voted for Sanders in the primary. My wife voted Warren.

Many of my friends and colleagues were split among Sanders and Biden. There are some Trump fans and those now undecided to. But for the left among us it was either of those. Well a few Warren also.

I don't ever recall being pressured by the party to choose Biden.

Anyone who didn't chose Biden will obviously for the most part support him. Why would anyone think we would vote 3rd party or even for a guy who rags on the left every chance he gets.

Polls or not Sanders was beat. He didn't do enough to install confidence that he could beat Trump. I would say also many Democrats remember the attitude of him and his supporters last time out too. His poor attempt to support Clinton and his supporters deciding to take their ball and go home resonates.

Yes Biden is not great. Yes he's not who many wanted but at the end of the day by turnout he won the nomination.

Bloomberg could have made a third party run and he'd have some Democrats support ahead of Sanders. Again, different to them supporting Trump.

But that is it - I can’t think of anyone specific whose word would matter a jot. Pelosi and Schumer would have supported Sanders, albeit not enthusiastically, as it would have been political suicide not to. You aren’t saying anyone from the primary field so who else do you mean by Dem establishment?

Possibly Manchi or one of the other very vulnerable governors in red states???

The reality of the situation is, for many of us who supported Warren, that if Bernie had stayed home this cycle, we'd be having a different conversation right now

But that didn't happen. So here we are.

I cant even see Manchin doing it. He'd have no choice but to jump party and would probably lose his next race.

Exactly

You know what for me and I have said this before. Sanders was a little two faced.

He would rag on the "establishment" on the left but he wasn't a Democrat. Surely if he thought he was the best candidate running as a third party would have been better for him.

Given what his supporters say here also.

Thing is he wouldn't. Why? Not becuase he would stand on the toes of the blue candidate but simply becuase national attention doesnt include third party candidates. He would have had to fight for recognition and air time. He would have needed a much larger campaign team too. As he would need to do all the leg work himself.

It made more sense for him to use the party.

I would have voted for him 3rd party. But I would have considered Warren also.
