January Transfer Window 2026

I’m struggling to wrap my head around this. Are we really saying that, with the combined knowledge of our scouts, the transfer committee, and David Moyes, there isn’t a single right-back option anywhere in the footballing world?

I’m aware that the finances have to stack up and that the player has to be interested in joining, but it’s honestly nonsense. To top it off, there’s talk of getting rid of the right-back who’s actually performing well.

Utter clown fiesta
"That profile of player just wasn't available this window."

Brace yourself for that level of intelligence-insulting corporate pseduo-speak excuse-making as the week continues...

Ha, I don’t at all. He is doing better with a run of games but everyone is obsessing with the need to get full backs who have 10 assists a season.
I’m happy with full backs who keep clean sheets first and foremost, wingers who assist and strikers who can get on the end of things.
Buy me a striker over a marauding fb every day. Give me wingers who play on their natural side and can cross the ball to those strikers too.
We have wingers who don’t assist yet all the blame is at the full backs.

I want more quality everywhere and would love a Baines equivalent on both wings but there seem to be very few fb these days who can defend and attack
Then start hating him ffs, we're here to FUUUUUUUUUUME!

I'd say people want a balanced player (or at least I do ) - JOB clearly isn't a RB and is great at the defending bit because he's, well, a CB, it makes sense, but he's obviously not a right back and is just doing his best there. Hollywood crosses no one's arsed about I'd hope - Patterson has provided a bit more width when he's on, even if he doesn't receive the ball he drags players out and that helps. JOB rarely does that if ever, so it leads to even less balance as it's whoever's at right wing to receive the ball and do some magic with it, which is a problem if that player isn't a winger too as it was the case last game. Square pegs in round holes and all.

Two Baines' either side would be great to watch going forward and terrifying to watch defending I think, but it'd be exciting either way

Currently our team has too many of those square pegs, and some players who are barely footballers.

He had us qualifying for Europe regularly before 🤷‍♂️

Not sure if you have heard, but he also won a European trophy
The league is so, so much more competitive now though. Finishing 6th then is the equivalent of finishing 10th now given how many teams expect to challenge for Europe every season these days.

For most of his first tenure the order of power was the 'big 6' (or 5 - didn't even have City in there til '09!), then us, then a random grab bag of whoever else.

Now each year expected to be challenging in the top half of the table you have:

City
Utd
Liverpool
Arsenal
Chelsea
Spurs
Newcastle
Villa

Then the tier below that, that we're in (i.e. 'challenging for Europe is not completely unrealistic but needs a great season'), is equally as congested:

Us
Bournemouth
Palace
Brighton
Forest
Brentford
Fulham

Obviously clubs have great years and terrible years, but that's roughly expectations for each club each season.

Breaking into that next tier of 8 clubs who have the expectation of challenging for Europe EVERY season is a HUGELY bigger ask than finishing 6th and 7th in his first period here.

Ffs, was buzzing when I saw the Patterson Genoa link as I thought we are surely after a right back then.

Next few pages took me right back down to earth. Surely we're not going with 4 centre backs for the rest of the season?

Agreed, the squad is so unbalanced. Lots of movement in the summer, you’d expect.

I’m also glad I didn’t quote my other favourite stat of comparing the number of assists in the last 2 years between Ili and DMc…
