looks like he's lost some weight.

i remember palace last season he was the colour of beetroot after about six minutes. he got sent off after 50 odd.

Few of the other players look fitter too

James McCarthy is an excellent player and very worthy of his squad inclusion.
Wouldn't argue with that at all.

My argument is that we currently have an imbalanced squad. We have Gana, Schneids, Davies, Barry and McCarthy competing for 2 positions, or sometimes 3 when we play a different system when we can also add Barkley to the equation. We have Besic coming back from injury who should be fully ready for next season, at which stage we will also have Walsh ready to step up from the academy.

We only have Barkley who can be considered a genuine attacking midfielder, but I wouldn't mind seeing Davies given a go at some stage in that role. We have little or no creativity whenever Barkley has a poor game or is not in the starting XI.

Going forward, I can see McCarthy being, at best, 4th choice for the 2 CM positions, which will mean little game time unless we have a lot of injuries. That's a waste of our resources and also the player himself won't be happy. He is also probably the most saleable of the group who could be considered second string. For that reason I would sell him in he summer and put the proceeds towards our budget for players in positions where we have a greater need.

That's in no way dissing Macca; we just have 3 very good players who are ahead of him in that position.

It's a fair point. I can see us playing 3 lads in there though. I think Koeman fancies Ross further forward. If we play 3 the squad looks ok.

He was excellent today in what could be his natural position. Glad he has stayed.

Indeed.

Jimmy Mac stays fit and regains his top form....and it looks like he is well on the way to doing that.....then both Gana and Schneiderlin will face a battle to be considered number one picks in DM each week.

I think it is brilliant we have three such high quality, high energy players competing for those two position in the engine room of the team.

And that is without considering Barry :)

Things are really looking up down Walton way
