James McCarthy

If he's staying, it's a big season for McCarthy.

He really needs to get back to the form he showed in his first season or risk becoming another member of our "Distinctly Average at best" group that already contains the likes of Gibson and Cleverley... or our "Woeful, need to be gone" group of McGeady and Kone.

Yeh agree on this.

I don't think he's actively going to be put on the market, so if he stays I hope he gets back to his best. Still a very good player in there but a) he needs to get out of this 'safety first' approach he's developed, b) stay injury free (not his fault I know).

Agree with this.

If somebody came in with like 15m for him I am sure Koeman would take the money, but I doubt that'd happen, and selling him for less than we bought him for would be a bit silly.

Still a good player but quickly needs to learn a bit of composure and positivity on the ball. I'm not sure we can blame it all on Martinez, although obviously his backwards-and-sideways approach clearly was of no benefit to the team.

We need to see more attacking intent from McCarthy if he is to be a serious part of the 'new' Everton under RK.

It's a lot to ask, cos whilst he does work hard, he has to be prepared, willing and trusting enough of his own capabilities to go forward with the ball and link a seven-man defence, with breaking fullbacks to make at least a six-man attack.

And if, as it might, that means he hasn't the gas for a whole game, fine, share it with Cleverley/Gueye/whoever.

On a different tangent and I hope I'm wrong on this, but it looks to me as though RK sees Gibson as the replacement for Gareth Barry... and that to me is bizarre.

Barry loves contact and is very good at it, his speed of release of the ball (because of his vision/experience) is arguably the best in the squad, and his reading and covering second to none.

And none of that is what Gibson has... the one place they converge is their slowness on the turn. Despair.
