James McCarthy

Thought him and Barry did the basics of their job very well and never stopped working...however like the rest of the team made mistakes. Has overall been very very good and should always be one of the first names on the team sheet.

The original critic here likes to churn out a production line of negativity.

If people must point the finger at players, point them at Jags, Alcaraz and Baines.

McCarthy was one of our bright sparks last night.

Great player but he was amongst the players who were naive last night. Better positional sense was needed from a few of them

I have a feeling its those that were very vcal in not wanting him, so wanted even the slightest excuse to have a pop.

Nahhh, the lad is a good player but he offered no protection to the back four last night, at one stage in the first half every liverpool player was taking turns to shoot like some 5 aside game. He offered no link up play for the front 3, only got beyond the front 3 on one occasion, for me he had a stinker last night.

Lad needs a firm boot up the arse but I would expect him to come good.

...in that type of role you can often look like you are chasing shadows when you are getting thumping and the game gets stretched. The team lost its shape an it could even have been worst than 4. The signs aren't good, but the reality is that we remain in the top 4 mix. I mentioned ahead of the game that top4 would remain a possibility regardless of the result and mention our win there in '86 when we went streets ahead of them and still lost the lead. Saying that, the manner of this defeat makes top4 and unlikely scenario but you never know.

Don't see why he's being highlighted. He never stopped running and made a fair few good interceptions, and generally pressed well. It's impossible for a player like McCarthy to look good after the team lose 4-0, unlike say Mirallas, who is the only player receiving any praise after last night -- because his contributions are offensive and are mostly solo affairs. McCarthy's a key cog in the team, but all the other cogs stopped turning.

Jagielka, Alcaraz and Pienaar were the worst players. Pienaar was atrocious, although quite possibly not fit. Jags shot us in the foot in the second half when we'd started a lot better. Alcaraz, well I felt sorry for him, the high line was suicide and no matter how good you are if you're slow, you're slow.

Anyway, point is, McCarthy was one of our less awful players and anyone singling him out was probably not a fan of his before last night.

How many blocks did Steven Gerrard get in to stop shots from barkley, osman and others from min 1 to min 90? Loads mate, they defended as a team, Barry put himself about but got booked as for the other lad , well...

Im a fan, I think hes been superb all Season, he was awful last night, but I personally thought the whole team, Mirallas aside was utterly shocking, good players dont become bad players after 1 game, he will bounce back, the whole team will, Villa will get spanked 8-0 on Saturday.

This thread has me scratching my head. He's been very, very impressive this season. Just because he (and everyone else apart from a couple) had a poor game against Liverpool everyone is on his back? Don't be stupid.

He's been extremely consistent this season and has a terrific engine on him. If you're heading to Goodison this weekend, make an effort to actually watch him, you'll be impressed.
