What a ridiculous thing to say. Barry had a decent range of passing and good vision, but he had lost a fair bit of pace by the time he came to us. He excelled partly because McCarthy was the energy in that midfield, winning the ball and giving Barry the space in which to do his thing. We did better in spite of McCarthy, not because of him. A certain Gareth Barry helped him look half decent
you last line there has made my 10 chins hit the floor bracewell was CLASS one of the best midfielders in the countryWhat a ridiculous thing to say. It was because we had some energy in midfield that Roberto’s team could play some quick attacking football that first season. We have lost that energy and bite, and look how long it takes us to get from one end of the pitch to the other now compared to the sides above us in the table.
I suppose Bracewell only looked good because he had Peter Reid alongside him?

That is entirely my point mate.you last line there has made my 10 chins hit the floor bracewell was CLASS one of the best midfielders in the country
No worries...cheers mate.Apologies mate read it wrong see what you mean now from above post
I'm not trying to put a slant on it though. Obviously some of the players we had in that squad were good, it would be bizarre to suggest otherwise. I wasn't even saying McCarthy wasn't good, just pointing out that saying he must be good because everyone thought he was after his first season isn't really very sound logic.
Interesting that you touch on confirmation bias though. You definitely apply it to McCarthy seeing as you think he was 'excellent under Allardyce'. He played a part in 5 under Allardyce, 4 of which we lost by an aggregate score of 10-2. The 5th was the game in which he broke his leg. We drew that game, against the league's bottom side, equalizing after he'd gone off. What fabulous performances he must have been putting in to help us to those results.
Well you are really. I could say something like he was one of the best players in a team of Stones, Lukaku, Barkley, Baines and Coleman. You exstrapulated from my point mate, it’s clearly not the nub of my argument of which there are probably six preceding posts. I said many had revised their assessment after watching him play football in his first year, that’s fairly correct, many had doubts over signing him, the fee and quality, that changed after people watched him for a year. What you are saying is that fans only rated him because we were winning, for me that’s dumbing down most Everton fans by saying they are just happy clapping or bigging up players because of results. I tend to believe that’s not generally the case. Saying words like obviously and logically, doesn’t change the fact we are both expressing subjective personal opinions. It’s bizare to suggest otherwise! Lol.
Oh I am bias when it comes to McCarthy I’d openly acknowledge that, I’ve followed him since the first time I saw him play for Hamilton. Always rated him highly. Still do. I’d critique his mentality at times. My bias doesn’t change others though, confirmation bias is at play on the negative side here in my opinion.
I remember mate and they are shiny stats, it’s hardly a shocker to hear we had poor results last season, especially over the transitition of managers and during that congested period. Stats are stats, watching games are watching games, he was our best player over those games in my opinion.
None one can have any idea if he's still any good until we see him.
It's quite conceivable those injuries, especially the laat one, have ruined him at top flight level.
Considering he wasn’t before it’s unlikely he will be now.
No you’ve somehow missed the entire point but nevermind, anyone who thinks McCarthy was our best player at Anfield when he did nothing but launch the ball out for a throw in every time he got it probably isn’t worth debating with.
