2025/26 James Garner

We do love a bit of stability...
If we finish on the same number of points next season just with a goal difference of 0 instead of -3 the club would be heralding it as year-on-year progress for the second successive season.

Some teams like Sunderland go from the Championship to Europa League in 1 season, others like Everton go from comfortably avoiding relegation to finishing in exactly the same position and claiming we're making progress.

Good game guys.

Still can't believe James isn't going to the World Cup and the fanny that is Henderson is.
I honestly don't think he played well enough to go. He deserved his call up due to his form earlier in the year but he needed a good end to the season and did nothing. Part of me thinks Moyes played a big part in that by running our best players into the ground.Dewsbury-Hall was playing close to that level a few months back but there was nothing left in the tank by March.

He was 'Everton good' this season...which is to say: not good enough to break into the national team by some distance.

People are delusional if they see the level of performance he tailed off to and believe Tuchel should have taken him to the world cup.

…I’d be sure Tuchel knew the decision about Garner and others some time before the squad was announced, I’d doubt the final games counted for much. Saying that, I do agree Moyes should’ve rotated more, especially in CM where Armstrong, Iroegbunam and Rohl had clearly earned his trust and deserved more game time.

Sometimes we undervalue our players @davek and I think you’re guilty of it regarding Garner. He’s a very decent player and is now a full England international. If you watched his performance in the game at Forest he was the best midfielder on show.

Running players into the ground is overstated. Garner played 41 games.
Arenal players won the league, got to the champions league final, league cup final.
Players put nearly 60 games when internationals are taken into account as well.
They are then off to the World Cup.
If we have any aspirations of European football the burnt out narrative needs to put to bed.
Games played with Grealish v games played without Grealish is probably the best way to track our season.
Over 1.5 points with him in the team v 1.01 points with him out the team

I wouldn't say it's overstated, it's how the term is Perceived.

The mental drain will play a big part in the physical drain, Playing how we do, and with teammates you're not fully confident in is going to gradually hit the mental side. We literally binned off 2 cups and were the most predictable team out there.

All players will have dips in form but if you have a manager that completely ignores it and wont utilise the squad, there goes the mental drain on the bench.

Garner didn't stop all season, but he ended up carrying to many sub-standard players.

I think they're the right words to describe what he did to some of these players.

Our tactics are to press with very little possession which is demanding. There's been plenty of games where you can see our best players struggling on 70 mins and needing to come off but our manager refuses.

I've got no doubt these players can handle a busier season but not playing these tactics with a manager who's seriously lacking when it comes in game changes.

I dont undervalue him, Im realistic about his consistency. He plays for long spells impressively and then just becomes anonymous.

He's been like that since we got him.

IMO he should be played at RB all the time and establish himself there. Pretty soon he'd get that England call up for that position.

…certainly disagree with that, he’s much too good a CM to be played at RB for us. I also think he’s closer to England as a CM than he will be as a FB.

I think he has a forward pass that makes it look like he has to be a no-brainer to have him in a CM berth. But I never see him take the game by the scruff of the neck and dominate it. He's good in CM when he shows up there, but on the right flank he's proven himself to be international class with England as an U-23 at RWB and for Everton he's been a breath of fresh air as a RB that can add to attack while doing their defensive duty.

In short: not brilliant in CM but potentially one of the best PL RBs.

It's far easier playing in a winning, passing team like Arsenal than playing for us and having to run yourself into the ground every game like Garner does.
He didn't look out of place on his debut for England and deserved another run out IMO, he certainly has more to offer these days than Henderson.

I think our entire team have suffered from the lack of fullbacks who are capable of carrying the ball upfield nd getting back quickly if we lose possession. Our midfield are left holding the ball because the opposition know if they mark our two ‘wingers’ out of the game, then our midfielders have no out ball other than sideways or backwards.

…..we need full backs that compliment the wide players ahead of them; blend. Difficult to build a new team in one summer window, not sure if we bring 2 FBs this one but I’d be amazed if we don’t have a new RB for the start of the season.

Mate, I will genuinely shed tears if we don't.
