2025/26 Jack Grealish

Candidly, no. But I cannot image a club being run worse than us in recent years. A doc on us would’ve been appalling.

The point is, Sunderland have a better squad than us now because they’ve not been in emergency survival mode (as a institution) for years and years.
Sunderland don't have a better squad than Everton.

Stress fracture in the foot is very likely season over. Stranger things have happened but those are not normally quick recoveries. Mind then looks forward to a few scenarios:

If we leave the squad as is, does that mean McNeil gets the rest of the season? Or is this an opening for Dibling to establish a position? Think we all know the answer to that.

If we try to find a winger in the last two weeks of the January window, just how incredibly bad is that signing going to be? We talking El Ghazi levels here or what?

Is that the last we have seen of Grealish in an Everton kit? I feel like even the revised 30 million would be too much in the summer, but I do hope some sort of deal can be struck. He has elevated the team overall this season, even if the impact has faded in recent months. It's been enjoyable to watch an Everton team with him in it.

And obviously I'm not the first to raise it, but the amount of soft tissue and now stress injuries being sustained at Finch Farm can not be a coincidence. Needs a proper investigation at some point, lest we spend every season missing two or three of our best players for long stretches from training injuries.

If that's true then he will go back to City, we are not going too pay his wages whilst he sits with his feet up in the sunshine somewhere.
It will depend on the loan deal. There might not be a contractual clause that allows him to be sent back while saving wages. This sort of thing will have been discussed in the negotiations. City might well have said no to it.

AI says 3 months for a foot stress fracture to heal....
It's likely a season-ender. A tough blow, but it is what it is. If we didn't have such a poor squad, we'd cope. Mind you, given we're not playing for a whole lot now, it's all relative. If we were in the FA Cup with a fair chance of progression, this would be even worse. As it is, he just takes a little bit of the remaining sparkle out of the season.

🦴 Stress fracture in Premier League football (realistic timeline)

For an elite footballer, most foot stress fractures (usually metatarsals) look like this:

Typical recovery

Minimum: 6 weeks
  • More common: 8–10 weeks
  • If it’s slow-healing or high-risk: 10–12+ weeks

  • That’s return to match play, not just jogging.

How the timeline usually breaks down

Weeks 0–2

  • Full rest from impact
  • Boot or protective shoe
  • MRI/CT to confirm location & severity
Weeks 3–4

  • Pool work, bike, anti-gravity treadmill
  • No sharp turns or sprints

Weeks 5–6

  • Straight-line running
  • Gradual loading
  • Modified boots / carbon plate insert
Weeks 7–9

  • Team training
  • Controlled contact
  • Match minutes managed carefully

  • Week 8–10

  • Full return if pain-free and imaging looks good
