I drink and gamble.

A logo on a shirt means nothing to me.
I only opened a sportspesa account to bag a free shirt.

So the logo on the shirt did, you signed up to SportPesa directly because they paid to advertise on Everton shirts

I am hardly one to moralise on anything. Thankfully the coward in me has kept me away from gambling, but the late Andy King summed it up well, imo, when discussing his life of betting.

To paraphrase, you take £1000 into a pub, once you have spent £20 (was the 70s!), you cant spend any more. Take £1000 into a bookies, you might come out with £20.

On the Sky tastic, in play bets, and the wall to wall adverts, a stain on the PL imo.

I never said that.
I think it is less damaging to society than gambling, but I never said it wasn't harmful. I think you're just looking for an argument.
Or maybe I’ve seen people badly affected by alcohol and find your twisted morals offensive? And anyone who thinks they’ve not bought something because of advertising is a 24 carat idiot. You always buy that unbranded beer that you see in all the bars do you?!

So.... I'm trying to understand this right.

I object to gambling advertising
You have a go, by deciding that I'm pro beer advertising.
I state that we can bin that off too as far as I'm concerned. In fact all advertising.
You know nothing at all about me but have convinced yourself that it is I who have twisted morals.
You're putting words into my mouth and then arguing against them like an utter loon.

For clarity, since you seem incredulous - at the point of sale, for beer, I see brand names and ignore them knowing, from experience, that they will deliver tasteless, mass produced, mediocrity. I tend to go for a live real ale quality product.( I can't recall ever seeing good real ale advertised.
.. Not that I look for it). One I've learned is good, rather than one somebody has spent millions trying to tell me is good.

At the end of all this, it sounds to me you're trying to use alcoholism to deflect an inner guilt about a latent gambling issue.

While I totally agree that gambling has a dangerous grasp on society and has a harmful impact, in a professional context I've seen how damaging alcohol is.

Don't get me wrong, I like a drink and feel that it doesn't really have an impact on my life or the lives of others, but for many in society it really, really does.

Up with drugs, alcohol has a huge involvement in crime - nigh on 50% of violent crime involves alcohol - and that's without discussing others impact it has.

I had/have massive problems with a gamut of addictions, including betting where I’ve had to self ban myself from a lot of the gaming sites. Luckily I’ve never lost big. I can’t say that advertising has ever changed that, I don’t bet because Ray Winston tells me too, I don’t drink because of ads on tv etc.

Unless you have addiction issues it’s very difficult to get your head round the fact that the flashy lights etc don’t really make a huge difference.

I think about a million hospital admissions a year are related to alcohol and about 15 deaths a day directly related to alcohol consumption so I’m saying it’s probably an issue .
This shouldn't really be an alcohol versus gambling debate. Ok they're both harmful. Let's not be happy if the club associates with either!

I'd be happy to go back to the 70s when there were no jarg visual litter on the shirts. Compared with the tv money, making your players into embarrassing mobile billboards is small fry.

I think we can all agree Tinned ham never ruined anyone’s life

Gambling is legal. If you want it to be banned then prepare for underground bookies with a wealth of problems like there is with illicit drug usage where there is a compelling argument for decriminalisation and regulation.

How should gambling be regulated? By maximum amount in single bets?Potentially the amount people can afford to lose is subjective but perhaps there should be an across the board figure.
It would also set out the rules for bookies. I have never seen a bookies cut someone off for spending too much. I've lost hundreds in a day and although had food and rent it completely ruined my month. Obviously it is my responsibility and fault but the bookies don't bat an eyelid.

Max amounts on roulette machines in bookies is a good step in my opinion. And i used to put two 50 notes superspins on every month. If it came off I was in the cash that month, if not I had already factored it into my wages.

If gambling is about fun then let people win only fun amounts. Or if you want to win a lot you'll have to hit a long odds winner.

I've never considered myself to have a problem, I just bet stupidly with my recreational cash and it was habitual.

Nowadays I put a fiver on first goal for the Blues (never win) or the occasional nag when I am bored.

So I would:

1) Put maximum single bet to 20
2) Put maximum spend in individual bookies to 200 in 24hrs

Maybe this could be completed via a card that you have to swipe in every registered bookie that is connected to a nationwide database. I'm the ideas man, someone else can complete the details.

I am obviously in the minority who find the Ray Winstone ads amusing though. I'm not even sure what bookies he represents though so not sure how effective it has been on me personally.
