It Matters More When...

Unsurprisingly, this study suggests football’s promotion of gambling leads to problems with addiction and debt.
If we Evertonians are to be, rightly, proud of EITC, should we also be ashamed and actively try and change our close ties to gambling companies?

It's a concern. When you watch football these days, gambling is a massive part of it. We bet silly money as a country and the number of addicts is increasing. The Premier League should ban all gambling adverts on shirts and betting ads in general should be banned other than when racing is on, as the levy from bookmakers keeps race courses going.

I hate all the gambling adverts, you cant get away from them, not a chance I would buy anything Everton related apat from a match ticket while we have a association with a gambling company, its an industry that ruins lives, and we have it on our shirts??

Coming off Chang we aren't on good form.

Gambling adds they're so sinister. So slimy.

Absolutely agree.

A lost a lot of love and respect for my club when they announced the current sponsor. It changed them, in my eyes from being of almost corinthian virtue, by modern standards, into a seedy club. Absolutely hate our association with advertising gambling irrespective of any wealth it brings. It can't end soon enough.

Too many clubs are sponsored by betting companies these days. Give me Angry Birds any day. :(

That said, we also used to be sponsored by Chang, a beer company. Is having alcohol on shirts just as bad?

Yer i struggle to enjoy a match without a bet on it, but at same time i enjoy the bet and have self control.. never bet and risk what i cant afford etc.. its all relative like isnt it ill bet more than some people will but its a hobby i enjoy and makes things alot more intresting

Deffo a huge buzz for me, up there with the other vices i enjoy ha ha

Im all for it, you cant blame betting companies for people getting addicted and loosing homes imo, the list could go on couldnt it, could say the same about bargin booze or pubs

Until we can manage to put EITC on the front of our shirts without harming our prospects, it's a question of what options are palatable. Is alcohol, gambling, or anything that can become a vice acceptable? Loans? Junk food? Expensive and polluting air travel?

It's a tricky issue. Give it time and I think that the betting sponsorship route will be forced out. In the meantime, a lot of those betting companies will be jockeying for public awareness before they are removed from the casual public eye.

You thought we had Corinthian values when we were sponsored by a beer? A beer which is made and widely drunk in a country which has a major problem with alcohol abuse? How quaint.

I get this argument a lot.

I'd rather it wasn't a beer too. However, a product that is enjoyed sociably by billions even though it does have the potential to damage some lives lives, to me is on a different level to a cynical exploitation of those who do not understand that the odds work against them; that the house always wins long term; that targets the poor and desperate with the minute hope and dream of a better life; that takes food from the table, the table from the house and the house from the family of those addicted to one last throw if the dice.

I have no issues with mates betting among themselves. I can see the fun and excitement, how skill and judgement can be used. However, to bet against one of these nefarious businesses which use complex computer algorithms to ensure the house more often than not wins, long term, is tantamount to exploiting the desperate.

I'm sorry, but nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

So basically you're saying because you drink but don't gamble, advertising alcohol is OK but betting isn't. You think because you can control yourself with a beer everyone should be able to, but you think people in general are too stupid to stop themselves getting hooked on gambling.

I enjoy a bet at the weekend, I understand that I won't often win, but I can have fun and am well capable of knowing when to stop. I enjoy it sociably, like you do with a beer. What an incredible understatement it is to say alcohol ruins 'some' lives. Incredible double standards.

Most countries regulate gambling quite stringently. If it was harmless that wouldn't be the case.

I am also sorry but there is little difference betting addiction and alcohol addiction. An addiction is a disease so for me, you should have the same stance on Chang as you do on SportPesa.

Alcohol adverts generally use emotional tools in their ads to get people drinking so, again, I see similarities with the complex computer algorithms to ensure people come back and bet more.

If we get a loan/credit card company next will you have the same views as they generally prey on the people who are inclined to get into more and more debt and lose houses, etc. etc.

You can lay into me if you like if you want to defend your vice so it sounds more acceptable in your head. We don't have to agree.

The issue here is about advertising an addictive pastime. I'd quite happily see all advertising scrapped. I've long lived by the observation that everything advertised mustn't be selling well (ergo it's crap).

Let's bin off beer advertising too. I don't think I've ever drunk a beer because it's been advertised.

Nobody ever bought a beer though, in the hope it might get them out of debt.
