Preparing for a eventual annexation of Gaza, destroy everything so Palestinians have nothing to return to

It’s truly appalling to witness the destruction in Gaza. As others have pointed out, it’s ironic and tragic to see Israel, which was founded in the aftermath of one of the greatest tragedies in Jewish history, becoming the perpetrator of such suffering.

From Israeli organisation Breaking the Silence. For those who may not know, Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran soldiers who have served in the Israeli military since the start of the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories.

"You went into Gaza for revenge. As much as possible. Women, children, anyone in sight."

On the funeral which sent shockwaves through social media, the jarring quotes which nearly all major Israeli news outlets chose to omit, and what they say about the IDF’s policies on the ground:

A recap: IDF reservist Shuvael Ben Natan was killed in Lebanon last week. During his funeral, his brother said he entered Gaza to take revenge on women and children. A fellow soldier said he became the platoon's "jokester" when he torched a house without approval "for the vibes."

These more damning descriptions of Ben Natan oddly didn't make it onto the many Israeli news sites which reported on said funeral. According to The 7th Eye, most Israeli sites which reported on it chose to cut these parts out. One outlet even edited them out of the video completely.

Another eulogy spoke of how less than a year ago, Ben Natan shot and killed Bilal Salah while the latter was harvesting olives near As-Sawiya. The speaker said police were "mean" for arresting him and taking his rifle afterwards. Unsurprisingly, it was eventually returned to him.

And so, brandishing an IDF weapon and uniform, he was sent back into Gaza and later Lebanon. Torching houses with no ‘official’ approval, but suffering so few consequences for the act that his fellow soldiers felt perfectly at ease reminiscing about it on national television.

And why wouldn’t they? IDF forces have been torching buildings all over Gaza for months on end, and still do. Some were even directed to do so by high ranking officers. They know: no matter how prevalent and public these horrendous transgressions are, the system will allow it.

Back in July, the IDF paid the usual tired lip-service we’re all used to by now, saying that “the burning of buildings that is not necessary for operational purposes is against the orders of the army and the values of the IDF." Those rules and values were thrown out long ago.

“Before you leave, you burn down the house — every house,” one soldier told Oren Ziv of +972 Magazine in July. “It’s so that [Palestinians] won’t be able to return, and if we left behind any ammunition or food, the terrorists won’t be able to use it.”

The mass burning of buildings, just like the endless stream of self made videos by soldiers looting and basking in destruction, are symptoms of how the IDF’s choice to look away from what it itself once considered unethical has normalized to the point of becoming de-facto policy and an integral part of how the IDF is fighting in Gaza."

Horrific, but nothing we did not know already

He has a wonderful knack of lying whilst telling the absolute truth - I mean, there’s absolutely and obviously a lack of trust between them but I’d imagine this is because we know that Netanyahu treats Israeli secrets, service personnel and hostages as things to be used and/or discarded at will. These are his most valuable things as well; what he cares for the rest of us and especially the Palestinians is even less.

I would imagine that he’d let the whole state, and certainly the whole world, burn if it meant he stayed in charge.

None of the above is meant to suggest Gallant is right either of course.
