Right-wing Israeli activists call for renewed settlement in Gaza
Right-wing Israeli activists gathered to call for renewed Jewish settlement in Gaza.
Hundreds of right-wing and ultranationalist Israelis took part in a conference today about reestablishing Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip.
The Gaza Strip has been devastated by Israel's offensive since the 7 October attack by Hamas on Israel, with the majority of Gaza's population displaced as much of the enclave faces a humanitarian crisis.
The conference, held near the Israel-Gaza border, attracted a number of prominent politicians - including some from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's own Likud party, such as national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the movement to resettle Gaza has crept from the extreme far-right fringes of Israeli politics into more mainstream discourse among Mr Netanyahu's right-wing coalition.
Mr Netanyahu himself has publicly dismissed the idea in the past but has yet to provide clarity on who he sees governing Gaza after the war.
Some of his government allies, however, have been explicit about their own preferred outcome.
"If we want it, we can renew settlements in Gaza," Mr Ben Gvir told the hundreds who gathered for a two-day outdoor conference titled 'Preparing To Resettle Gaza,' held about 3km (2 miles) from the enclave.
Mr Ben Gvir also called for Israel to "encourage emigration" of Palestinians from Gaza, adding: "It's the best and most moral solution."
Smoke could be seen rising in Gaza and the loud bangs of artillery sounded in the distance, as the conference went on.
The military forcibly evacuated Jewish settlements from Gaza in 2005, a move that bred resentment towards the state among many of the settlers who now seek to return.
