If they expected a response that was beyond what they can politically accept or currently could counter with their resources, they wouldn't have done the attack.

Likewise, Iran will do the very same when planning their response. Neither party will want this to turn into an actual full-blown shooting war - it's a game of chess.

Exactly!

Lots of stuff and bluster from both sides. Hez and other Iranian proxies will launch an attack/series of attacks on Israel (military / govt) targets. However Iron Dome, David’s sling and US patriot/THAAD missile defence systems are a match for anything that can be thrown at them.

I also noted yesterday that Israel made a point of moving their Jericho 3 IRBM nukes to their launch sites in the Negev, however they did this in broad daylight. You don’t move your nukes around during the day unless you want somebody to see what you’ve got.

Iran want payback for Israel's terrorist attack last week on their embassy.

As you say it will perpetuate more violence and further escalate matters.

I will not be surprised if the whole middle east is embroiled in this by summer. Israel and Iran are both 2 countries run by absolute fundamentalist nut jobs and appear to he happy to let the world burn around them.

This is an over-simplication but the problem is not so much giving Israel a guarantee of ironclad support, its giving Netanyahu that guarantee.

His entire career is one of abusing trust and leaving other people to face the consequences - October 7th being an especially grim example - and he clearly is going to do the same to Biden over the next few months. If you offer to protect Israel, he will take the opportunity to make you do that and then blame you if it doesn't work perfectly. In exchange you will get nothing.

He'll probably get a load of those votes still though because the alternative is trump. Like me, I'd not vote in the next GE if I could but I have to vote for labour as it's a swing seat

That is certainly a possibility, although perhaps it should be mentioned that watching the Israeli government flail about like this is doing far more damage to the long term security of the state than any conventional retaliation now by Iran would ever achieve. This act - and others - certainly seem that they are inviting an escalation.

They might be thinking that if the Netanyahu government continues down this path, its support will shrink away to not a great deal whilst also emboldening and enraging the neighbouring countries into a coalition against it. That would offer much greater potential than lobbing a few drones or ballistic missiles would.
