What is the reason for the US doing this?

“The US engaged in good faith on the text, said Deputy Permanent Representative Robert A. Wood, that would increase opportunities for hostage release and more aid to reach Gaza.

“Unfortunately, nearly all of our recommendations were ignored” leading to an “imbalanced resolution that was divorced from reality that would not move the needle forward on the ground in any concrete way. And so, we regretfully could not support it."

He said the US still could not understand why the resolution’s authors declined to include language condemning “Hamas’s horrific terrorist attack” on Israel, of 7 October.

It killed people from a range of nationalities, subjecting many to “obscene sexual violence.”

He said he had explained earlier in the day why an unconditional ceasefire would simply be “dangerous” and leave Hamas in place, able to attack again.

It was “a recipe for disaster for Israel, for Palestinians and for the entire region”.

Any ceasefire leaving Hamas in control would also deny Palestinians the chance to build something better for themselves, he added.”…..

political donations and influence?

Not one media outlet is pushing the idea that what Bibi is doing is actually terrible for Israel, never mind Gaza.
It's like there's collective amnesia about his politics or the kind of coalition government he had to form to get back power.
No one wants the finger of antisemitism pointed at them. Just look at what's going on at Harvard.
There can't be collective amnesia when almost no one in this country knew in the first place. Most Americans don't know what's going on, why it happens or who is responsible...and that's when we're discussing domestic politics. They allocate blame to presidents like they're kings, when in reality a president is a highly limited actor on the domestic stage. A president has nomination and veto power, which confers some discretion over how to spend congressional appropriations and executive branch policy. That's it. People think they're responsible for things like inflation, wages and job availability anyway.

Now imagine how clueless Americans are about what happens overseas, and what a president with significant discretion in that arena should do about it. This is how we ended up with a policy of killing terrorists by drone strike, ignoring the collateral damage and winking at Israel's campaign of violence against Palestinians, as they winked at ours in the Middle East. Then people wonder why there are attacks against ships in the Red Sea, and why Americans are disliked overseas.

Q: Is there anyone at all who believes for a second that Israel will meaningfully engage in talks on a two-state solution with representatives of Palestinian civil society once Hamas are supposedly eliminated? Or, for that matter, that the United States would do anything purposeful to bring them to talks?

A: No and No.

Netanyahu is on record saying it will never happen: they want all the land and more. Eretz Israel.

Could be a scene from Nazi Germany.
Remember Abu Ghraib prison ?

I would dare to suggest that it is an area that you have been invested in for some time, possibly admirably active in opposition to Israels poor behaviour and I do understand that the more people have invested in years of trying to achieve justice for Palestine that this situation must hit a particular place in hearts and hopes.

That said, the only actor in the region that is a real concern is the Iran regime and its proxies. Countries in the region are refusing to take any refugees or get involved and also know that Hamas are a puppet moved by Iran.

It is heartbreaking to see what is happening and I believe that Israel are just causing more problems for themselves down the line but I do not see tha matter escalating as Hamas (and Putin) might wish. Iran know what the consequence would be and the UN are struggling to even define terminology for pauses or ceasefires.
likes of iran etc all talk good at burning flags and threatening speeches but that’s all
