I saw someone say that without Israel in the Middle East China and Russia would control most of the world's oil. Presumably the idea being they could cut it off. In that context it makes a lot more sense that the West would blindly defend Israel - it's mainly self interest

TBF that “Israel as a secure base for the West” is probably as much of a fib as “Israel is our closest ally” one, and is put about by the same people.

If the Balfour Declaration was never made, and Anglo-Arab relations had continued along the lines that Lawrence advocated, neither China or the Soviet Union / Russia would have gotten anywhere near the region. We would probably live in a much better world, too.

I'd go a step further, and say those that cheer on Israel without being Zionists either just see them as geopolitically useful to keep the ME unstable, or have a dislike of immigrants, Muslims in particular.
