Is Martinez our best signing this year?

I really rated Moyes because whilst many bang on about remembering the 80's, I can still remember the 90's as well (and more than just one game), and he took us from that nightmare and made us a feared team worthy of pride again. We were the easy three points that teams above us fumed about when they lost to us... Now its us fuming at a draw against the teams we used to be. That's why I like Moyes, because I too am a football fan more than a money man, and because I much prefer it this way around with the expectation of 3 points rather than getting our arses whooped... again. I am also realistic enough to realise that actually getting 4th was an achievement as immense and difficult as Wigan winning the cup, and to stay in those higher positions, far more impressive than he is being given credit for.

That being said, I also like Martinez so far and I cannot wait to see the lineup and the sort of football his team will play, the new players two of which I think are very exciting prospects for the coming season, and to hear the silky mofo big us up at every opportunity more attacking lineups, strikers as first choice subs (none of this may happen of course, but until it doesn't we can dream).

Its all good, but you can't deny that given the money Martinez has already had (more than Moyes total spend), the squad Moyes left, and the sheer amount of problems you lot claim Moyes had, if you are right about Moyes, it should be an absolute doddle for Martinez to do better than him even on his first year?

Fortunately I don't agree with most of the anti Moyes comments and prefer facts and what I see myself, so I am expecting Martinez to be exciting, and to drop a little, because like it or not, mock it or not, 4th,5th,6th,7th or 8th under our business model is a superb result that will be tough to match... Its why no one has yet.

Other than that I agree utterly with your post though mate

Mate as you know I have no problem with your point of view you always put it out there decently and without rancour.

Very broadly speaking I think much of your comment does rely on financial plus points (the transfer "failings", pounds per league position) and without doing it to death I'm just not a convert.

That money dictates in football I realise is a fact - but not 100% of the time. I accept it but despise it, our only hope is a sneaky 4th or assault on the League and FA cups via guile and audacity Moyes did it once via 4th (well done!) but then appeared scarred by the ensuing european campaign. Afterward pragmatic utility play infused everything and that audacity hardly ever surfaced again - that's why I wanted him gone - EFC ain't some Coventry/Charlton/Southampton monkey.

Way too early... But I hope time proves this to be true.
Cause if he answer is no, that means the future is not bright at all...

So depressed that some posters think that finishing 7th is a success, but winning a trophy isn't.

The general consensus seems to be that people wouldn't mind us dropping a league place or 2 this year if we won a trophy. I'd have to agree to be fair, I'll take 8th and a cup over 4th/5th any day.

No-one in their right mind would choose anything other than top 4.

The thing is, getting to 4th or even 5th requires and so would entail a quality, consistent season full of winning football. It would be enjoyable and certainly better for your all round health and mood. But for a crystallised memory of pure and utter joy you can take to the grave, you'd have to choose cup win. Both are thoroughly enjoyable successes in my mind

4th would push us further as a club, most definitely, financially of course, but would attract a higher class of player.

But I was only 2 when we won our last piece of silverware, I'd prefer to see us win something next season, it would be special for a lot of Everton fans who are young and have probably never seen their club win anything.

Champions league provides cash and status which leads to marketing windfalls and investment which in turn leads to better players.

A cup win for those other than the top clubs usually leads to relegation and a little cash.

Didn't I just say that?

So you wouldn't want Everton to win a trophy then? Using your example we'd be relegated then.

What a load of nonsense. We haven't won anything for 18 YEARS, I've never seen Everton win anything either. I want that to change. The benefits are huge for Champions League, that is agreed by myself and everyone on here but winning something like the FA cup is special in itself.

We have a stronger team than last year, a bigger squad with youth coming through.

Please don't devalue things like the FA cup when fans like me have never seen us win anything.

I would, it's very realistic for us to win a cup next year under Martinez. However thinking we'll achieve top four next year is daft.

Under our financial restraints and under our ****e 'supposed' investors we have no chance reaching top four unless we get new investment, to spend on a top class striker as one example. It's what let us down from getting European football for next year.

Nearly as depressing as those who would accept 10th and finishing below the likes of west brom, stoke and Fulham.

I just about remember 66 when we won the cup but finished 11th the 2 seasons after we finished 6th then 5th. I don't remember those seasons and had to look up where we finished but 66 is imprinted in my mind for life. 95 we won the cup and finished 15th the next season we finished 6th but I bet everyone has fonder memories of 95 rather than 95-96. 84 we finished
7th bet you no one was that bothered we only finished 7th. 1933 we finished 11th and i bet not many people knew that but definately knew we won the Cup. The Cup is a trophy that is long remembered and revered for life 3rd, 4th 5th or 6th without a cup isn't.
