Is Baines Irreplaceable

just don't see Baines going because even though any player is replaceable the question is what he means to us opposed to what he would mean to any potential buyer. he would be asked to slot into a back four and left midfield that may not be prepared to allow him the freedom that ours does and others will be competing for the set pieces. Then the most important thing in my eyes is that he is a major part of the heartbeat of the team and you need to know you can replace that, he probably wouldn't be that anywhere else he went. so whatever value we should put on him I think any other team would be stupid to pay.

a lot of this has to be what Baines wants. Sure he's a good pro, local lad etc. and on our current team is given license to do a lot more than defending. There is no doubt that he's a hell of an asset. However he's coming on for 29 y/o hasn't had the chance to grace the Champions League and pitch himself against the best that has to offer. Moving to Utd wouldn't mean moving home or if he did move it wouldn't be so far away. He may want a move but is gracious enough not to broadcast it.

The Guardian suggests that Utd will have to up the ante to 15m. I think this is still too light, 15m plus that Dutch lad (Buttface or whatever) or something nearer the 20m mark and yes .. it's good business for the club and assuming all of the money goes to replenishing the squad then I would sell. Shaw and Rose are very good, younger prospects, I even think Oviedo could do a similar job. I don't want to lose him but business if business and we need money to build the team .. and Moyes knows that more than anyone.

This is a game of brinkmanship, i dont think Baines is pushed on going, while from the club point of view hes at the optimum value in terms of selling - will tell a lot about in terms of the club and their overall agenda if he goes.

Who are we likely to get to replace him if/when he goes? Not seen much of Shaw, but as he is a premier league regular and English, he won't be cheap?

I think its likely we have bought Oviedo knowing he could replace Baines or maybe Pienaar a few years down the line. He is more likely to be given the chance than buying a straight swap. He maybe ready to replace Baines in four years so lets see then

How many goals and assists has baines produced last season for the club? Anyone can be replaced it,s what you replace them with that's important.

We'll need to bring in a good LB. Oviedo, Garbutt and Distin are the possibilities to fill in there, and the only one of the three to actually be exclusively recognised in that position is a youngster with no first team experience. Shaw's a good player but we'd be looking 8-10m easy, which is a big chunk of the Baines money. The problem with losing Baines is that we'd also need to address the creative loss in attack, so it's almost like losing two players.

Let's be honest here, though: he's almost certainly gone. There's no way Utd would make a bid unless Moyes had tapped him up beforehand. It's a shame, but he knows this is the last opportunity he'll have to put some trophies on the shelf. It's also the last opportunity we'll have to make any money from him. Hopefully it's closer to 20 than 12m.

You'd be lucky to get shaw for <10m, Southampton have plenty of cash they don't need to sell.

If we bid for Shaw it would probably spark interest from other clubs rumoured to be admirers, like Arsenal, and I think Southampton are quite well placed to resist all but the most extravagent bids for him so it's unlikely we could make an acceptable bid without basically offering most or all what we would receive for Baines.

In a nutshell, yes.

If Baines goes I would be prepared to give Oviedo the start at LB - he was presumably brought in to back up Baines and eventually take over from him anyway.

Having said that, I don't WANT him to go. He's not irreplaceable, but he's as close to irreplaceable as we have in this squad. We'd find it difficult to fully replace every aspect of what he brings to the pitch: set-piece taker, goal threat, delivery from the left, fits the bill for the home-grown quota. He's far more than just a fast, reliable, left-footed left back.

Replacing Felli's overall skill set would be less difficult, in part because his sale would generate more funds than that of Baines and partly because there is less to his all round game in comparison to Baines.
