Benefits of Boris’ Brexit: Spar things available in Sainsbury’s.

Brexit checks on goods crossing the Irish Sea are forcing Sainsbury’s to fill some of its Northern Ireland supermarket shelves with Spar-branded products.

About 70 products with the Spar logo, including milk, steaks and sausages, have started appearing in Sainsbury’s stores across the region.

To avert gaps on shelves and in online offerings the chain is sourcing products from Henderson Group, a Northern Ireland food wholesaler that usually supplies Spar and Vivo stores.

The arrangement underlines supply chain pressures caused by customs checks between Northern Ireland and Britain.

England, Scotland and Wales left the European Union’s single market for goods on 31 December but Northern Ireland did not. Products containing animal parts require export health certificates in accordance with EU regulations.

“A small number of our products are temporarily unavailable for our customers in Northern Ireland while border arrangements are confirmed,” said a Sainsbury’s statement. “We were prepared for this and so our customers will find a wide range of alternative products in our stores in the meantime and we are working hard to get back to our full, usual range soon.”

I see (in the EU thread) that the DUP and UUP are looking to trigger the 'safeguard measures' in the border protocol, which separates the six counties from Britain. Aren't there 3 years and 358 days to go before the protocol is reviewed? Should Arlene and her mates just wait and see?

I agree, people should just wait and see how it all settles down or is tweaked. But suggesting wait and see in the EU thread will get you an instant reprimand and derision......

So Arlene and her mates just let the six counties drift to a United Ireland? Do you have any idea why she stopped sabre rattling when Johnson binned her after making aĺl of those promises to the unionists? Do you think she has a secret arrangement with Johnson or is she just a defeated woman? Or do you think we should wait and see?...

What do you think ?

I honestly don’t know. But, like I assumed you were saying, we may need to wait and see....
You must have misread. I asked firstly whether Arlene shoud wait and see, and then I asked you whether you thought we should wait and see. If you think we should, how long would you wait before pronouncing on the new border that has now separated the six counties from non EU Britain?

I don’t know. Let it settle and see what everyone feels...but I couldn’t put a date on it....

Are you trying to argue with a publican? Who is winding you up?
Ahhh.. "wait and see" is a clue.
Use the ignore button...it works.
;) ;)

I‘m not a publican. I am a retired person who owns a couple of businesses, one of which happens to be a pub and a bit of a hobby. I am not winding @Emlynsqueakyvoice up, just trying to have a rational conversation. Take your hatred elsewhere.....

If Arlene had flashing lights and a beeping horn she couldn’t be more in political reverse mode.

As you know Pete, she voted against May’s deals as she misread the direction of travel. She over-played her hand and was thrown under the bus for a deal that creates an all- Ireland economic system. You will have noted she voted against the deal in Westminster despite the democratic wishes to remain

Andrew Marr had 46% of the viewing figures last Sunday morning (Eastenders level), a gifted platform to sell Brexit and note how she lashed out that Republicans wanted a no deal. She ignored the detail of the deal and tried to make it sectarian. A zero sum mentality.

For her own sake she needs to own the deal and sell it because in 4 years time she will not persuade a vote at Stormont to reject the protocol.

Will she really try to make NI Assembly elections a de facto sea border poll?

I didn’t see the programme. But I think she has to come to terms with reality. The issue over the border in the sea is more of a ‘getting one over you’ type things at the moment, whereas what NI needs is just having the best of everything. Whether NI and ROI become one is for the future and people of Ireland to sort out. But today’s problems are about how to make today’s arrangements work for everyone. I think that in four years time most people will be happy with what is in place, but who knows....

Not my intention at all to flag wave, just stating that the DUP/Tories have constitutionally severed the Union and Arlene needs to own this and lead and prepare NI accordingly.

Obviously it’s not seen this way by the U.K. , but NI now needs to work out how to make all this work.....
