Looks like they may well be approaching Chenowith's 3.5% threshold.

It's interesting that's the currently cited number, as I remember it being down in the 2-3% range in the earlier research. It's likely that the reason for the difference in the number is that Chenowith is explicitly focused on non-violent resistance. If we're talking armed resistance, the number in principle should be a lot lower.

It's also important to point out that the 3.5% number is just the 'it always has worked in the past' threshold. I would suspect that as a regime becomes more heavily invested in quelling opposition, the number increases. I haven't crawled around inside that dataset, but I would be surprised if any of the cases in it deal with a regime quite as oppressive as Iran's.

I went to Iran in 2012. On the plane out there I got chatting to an Iranian, IIRC one from the German diaspora. He was saying that from a demographic perspective, women were taking over in some areas, eg universities where they were starting to become the majority out of the two sexes. He was saying that the regime was going to have to modernise its approach to women and soften a little bit. But it seems in the end they didn’t. Maybe we’re seeing the consequences of that now.

I’m by no means an expert and this is just pure speculation on my part.

We talk a good game in this country, but we mostly just bend the knee.

Surely they will need one of the military generals (or suchlike) to side with them with his view being that to help he could become a national hero and of course the new leader...

Otherwise, they will be crushed before long like the Chinese have done to their protestors in the past.
