But isn't that just what they want.
Excuse for their allies to have a go at the Americans.
This will escalate into something none of us want.
Let's not forget, Iran isn't particularly well liked by many Middle Eastern states either - namely, Saudi Arabia - so they've got to be careful who they poke.

As Persians, a lot of Arabs dislike them more than the west, and the states with economies centred on oil and gas will not want that traffic disrupted.

They may have sway in many states who lack their own authoritative or well-cemented leadership, but against other powerful states they need to be careful.

The wests bully boy tactics create havoc in these places
I'm not going to disagree, and I ain't going to pretend that natural resources and trade routes aren't a reason why the west keep getting involved.

The west's desire to have control / superiority over the region goes back much longer, too. This is something that's often ignored because of the above.

However, and it's a big one, let's not pretend that at this present time or in the foreseeable future it'd be a harmonious place without some form of involvement.

Honestly, I have no idea myself what would be best because it feels like we're in a Catch 22 situation.

Im with you on the natural resources etc but, as for the harmony…it should be their battle, not ours. We are the terrorists here (there).funding and arming Israel, the Afghans (v Russia),Assad etc
Blood on our hands is an understatement

Again, I'm not disagreeing with this in many ways, and with time there will be the likes of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey will further cement their influence.

Our protection of Israel and involvement in country, political and ethnic conflicts will always cause division, too. But it does come back to regional stability.

This is why we have relationships of convenience with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, even though on many levels our views are polar-opposite.

So, can we (the world) afford to allow regional stability to occur? How will it impact on the world? Let's not forget, China and Russia will only get involved too.

Sometimes, it's better the devil you know even if the involvement is a bitter pill to swallow.
