Have to say lads when i bump up the Spec on the Dell Studio Xps 8000 and the iMac 27 inch - im leaning toward the mac, i know im paying for the wireless key board and mouse and 27 inch display - but my god it is 27 inchs and lets face it size does matter - honestly though have been impressed with my Gfriends i mac and this laptop that defies its age and is still superb. If i added the display with the Dell and the wireless mouse and keyboard and someof the software options with the Mac surpriseingly there coming in at a similar cost.

The Dell has:

Pro
an I7 chip set 2,93 ghz
8gb Ram
Nvidia 1gb card

Cons
My last Dell gave up after 5 years
No Display
Basic Software
No Wireless Mouse, mouse/keybord

Price 1135

The Imac 27inch

Pro
Stunning display 27 inchs
I7 chip set 2,80 ghz
8 gb Ram
Restore discs come with (big plus for me)
Decent come with software
Wireless mouse and Key board as standard

Cons
No option for a Blue ray drive
Ati 512 graphics card
Costs more

Price kitted out: 2173

So hang on, you're paying an extra grand for a mouse and keyboard, a slower processor, an inferior graphics card and a bigger monitor?

I honestly don't understand how that is a choice.

Well where i am at the mo: is with the Dell graphics card i need to get the right monitor to get the best out of it which is extra, the best they have is 24inch for 600 at the same spec as the mac but smaller. If i went the wireless Keyboard and mouse route that an extra 50 and the software if i ordered with dell compared to whats inclusive with the mac would prob bump up another 100 on the dell- coming in at around 1800. Apparently the processor on the Mac is the origanal high end i7 chips and not the scaled down version with the dell brought out to the mainstream market - apparently the Mac is base 2.8 ghz base but theres a turbo hyperthreading thing that clocks it full max at 3.2 ghz.

Gfriend just told me she gets a 10% student discount on the Mac if she orders so comes in at around 1900.

So thats 1900 Mac Vs 1800 Dell all in!

As in Mac - in - tosh!

Has to be sayed mate - if i made the same software - Display and wireless upgrades to the Dell its in and around a similar cost, while the biggest dell screen on the market is 24 inchs and 600 top end spec like the mac offers, i was surprised by that but reckon thats how dell make their money in the additional extras.

Couple of 100 in difference all added up.

use an lcd tv for your display.

I've never ever had a virus on my Mac.

Mac doesn't understand .exe files where most viruses hide their dirty little RS selves....

Ghost, please GET off the high horse! If you wanna get down to the economics of it, I can more than afford an Apple.

More. Than. Afford.

I choose PC's as I like them. A sensible user has no problems with Windows. I have had Vista for a couple of years, my PC is on 24/7 (it gets rebooted every week or so) and it is still running great.

As for who builds iMacs....Apple builds them out of PC parts. That is a fact, and no amount of baawwing from the Appleites is going to change that.

I am not ignorant (as you profess me to be), I am not cheap (as you profess me to be) nor am I a fan-boy (as you are showing all the signs of). I pick the product that works for ME. Which is what Neiler should do.

Mate, if you covered everything you want in a computer already, a PC will more than do the job you want it to. Stay away from the low rep sights and torrents (hell, any p2p for that matter), keep your gf from installing everything under the sun and your PC will run just dandy. And you will have a lot of pocket change left from not buying Fruit.

Isn't ME (Millenium Edition) unsupported now? (And rightly so).
What are low rep sites? Torrents I know of, but what is the matter with them and other p2p software? What do you download with?

Point proved there, your paying nearly twice the price for the same spec.

Overpriced tosh.

Just to prove a point when it comes to the mac vs pc debate, it's very common for pc people to not compare like for like. I don't think it's deliberate, I think it's more a different mindset. Yes when you look at bare specs there are occasions when you can look at a mac and think, bugger me that's expensive.

But if you want a true comparison

Dell's all in one solution:

Dell Dell XPS One 24 Desktop

Entry level xps one 24 - £1,279
Top end system - £1,789

Apple:

Entry - £949
Top end system - £1,599

Funny how in a like for like comparison the mac is umm..... bugger me it's cheaper!!!! who'd have thought?? Clearly with the PC you're paying extra for the plastic, ugly looks, and umm Microcrap?? What a rip off! :P

Spec wise it's also behind, who'd have thought

In all seriousness though, it's always good to get both sides of an argument. Cost is always a relative variable. If a cheap price is an absolute must due to monetary constraints, sure I'd buy a cheap PC. Mind you I'd probably run Ubuntu on it instead of Windows, but in the interest of fairness I really do like the look of Windows 7. The only problem is that wont run very well on a cheap box

If you're a student mate, student discount is 14% if you log onto a computer and order through your university network. Also the added support options is dirt cheap, something like £40 for 3 years cover and telephone support. That's real telephone support too, trust me what PC folk never mention is if you have a problem with a PC you call Microsoft, who then refer you to the vendor, who then refer you to Microsoft..... get the picture. Apple consistently come out number 1 in Computer support

Just make sure you order through a computer that's logged onto a Higher Education network to get the full discount. Also double check to see if it's cheaper to upgrade the RAM via a third party such as Crucial. It's not difficult to fit RAM.

Apple's argument, although I think it's a lame one personally, is that Blueray drives are easy to get hold of as a third party add on, ie plug it into one of the firewire ports etc. They're real reason for not adding it is two fold, they think that most content will be delivered online in teh future and secondly something to do with licensing costs. Either way it's a lame reason not to fit a Blueray drive

Something to think about mate!

Im begining to think do i really need 8 gbs of RAM - want it to do me over the next 3-5 years.

Yes, I have 4 and I run out! lol. If you're going to do any heavy PHotoshop work the more ram the better.

Mine gets gobbled up with multi tasking though. OSX isn't like windows in the way it allocates RAM, the more RAM you have with OSX the more it will use instead of using the swap file.

Once you get used to Expose and Spaces, you'll easily have 10-15 apps running at the same time on a regular basis. Couple that with the fact you'll probably only ever reboot your system once ever two months or so when there's an OS update, and you'll be quite glad you've got the extra RAM

Dylan is right mate, for a healthy windows PC it's a good idea to stay away from P2P sites. There will always be some form of malware or spyware on there, trojans etc etc. If you do have a PC and use torrent sites, it's always a good idea to check the ratings on a file before committing to download.

Not sure if this is allowed; but for speed junk the torrernts they're crap. Either use newsgroups or for simplicity Index :: Warez-BB.org and a rapidshare account. Cheap, very fast, and unless you want porn (it's not allowed) I highly doubt you'll not be able to find anything you're looking for there. Oh except for MOTD, they don't post it.

Maddison. We get it, you're an Apple fun boy despite trying to post "balanced" comparisons you've got the affliction as most other apple owners. Bad, bad teddishness
