In any event, if it's a hoax then this is certainly a poor way to go about resolving the situation.

I would much rather see them own up to it, confess that their intentions were to make a commentary on modern media, admit that the story they told could be considered exploitative in much the same way that modern media often is, concede the hypocrisy and the lesson learned, apologize and move forward.

But in this day and age, true character is so hard to find. Most opt for the cowards option, which is to hide and hope it blows over, or the Donald Trump option which is to deny any wrong doing and blame everyone else.
