This is a good point which I think needs discussing.

Personally, I don't think it would have mattered a jot.

He would have been off to OT anyway and I think this move has been on the cards for a couple months now.

But here's what I can't help but wonder.

Suppose we were in the Final tomorrow.

And suppose United did announce Fergie's retirement this week as they did.

And suppose the announcement of the new manager had to be made by yesyerday's opening bell on Wall Street as we are told it had to be.

We would have had our whole Cup Final preparation ballsed up.

and united would'nt have lost any sleep over the fact

The Europa League is a poisoned chalice. Moyes deliberately went to avoid the 5th spot. 1-0 down at Sunderland and only one man up front. A few weeks ago Liverpool said they would not like to go in it on fair play. They reversed this a few days later for diplomacy sake as the press were making a meal of it and they didn't want to get in the bad books of EUFA or the FA.

The Europa League is a poisoned chalice.

Might be true. A lot of travels and midweek games for reasonable little money rewards. But there are other positive things about qualifying for it, mostly becoming a more common name in the rest of Europe. Also the offer of European competition would help lure better players to come to us. Yes, we have been a consistant team in the top7 in PL, but that might not be enough for a player to come to us instead of going to another team about our lvl of performance. I think Swansea and Wigan (if they manage to stay up) will be able to get players that will help them improve due to the fact that they have EL to tempt with.

We were so close to get it ourselves. If we had beaten Wigan we would almost certainly have gotten into Europe. Yes, I know we wouldn't have been drawn against Millwall. But if Chelsea beat us and ManU would have beaten Millwall (very likely) they would have met in the FA-CUP final and since both of them are in the CL, 6:th would give an EL-spot... Now we finish just short of it again.
