2017/18 Idrissa Gueye

I'd have him in over Morgan every day of the week as things currently stand.

Though i'd have Davies in ahead of the two of them 9 games out of 10 as well!

..they're all decent footballers, none have to be particularly better than the other. It's a matter of finding a blend, players who compliment each other in the build of an effective team. That's what good managers do.

Proof if ever needed that football is not a stats game. He had the highest passing accuracy because he refused to attempt any forward passes, so only 88% success rate from 77 simple 5 yard backwards and sideways passes under no pressure is actually really crap.

I agree with the principle Mike, but 66.4% of Gueye's passes were forward

Gueye won more tackles than any other player, and gained possession 21 times in total. Made two interceptions (Schneiderlin was the game's highest with 7).

Gueye also had 92 touches, 11 more than our next highest player Schneiderlin.

Gueye was our top passer with 77 passes, and his passing accuracy was the best in our side at 88%. 48 of those passes were in the opposition's half - again the most in our team.

So basically, he was our best tackler, best player on the ball and he ran 11.32K in total, just less than the player who ran the most for us - Schneiderlin.

And we all - myself included - said those two had crap games :D

Oh my god. After reading that it's clear I know absolutely nothing about football. Hahaha.

Yep. As with Morgs earlier on this season, when he's poor he stands out like a sore thumb because usually we expect more.
I reckon it's what I was saying here.

  • Gana/Schneiderlin. I'm not convinced on two defensive midfielders - big fan of Schneiderlin and Gana, so much so I think only one is needed to disrupt play. The game has moved on a fair bit but Vieira, Keane, Essien etc didn't need someone sat beside them in that role. They took accountability for that part of the pitch and did it well. I think having both of them limits us going forward and creates a vacuum.

I think it's part of why Davies is so refreshing - that option to play the ball forward well from a more central position.
Agree all round

There is a bit of a conundrum here

The Schneiderlin/Gueye axis isn't needed in some games. Neither of them are what you might call a driving force in midfield.

Schneiderlin has good positional sense (usually) and is capable of playing the holding role as well as a ball-winning, box-to-box type role.

Gueye has unbelievable energy and is brilliant at pressing and winning the ball back, he brings great dynamism to our midfield but he isn't positionally great at times and this means he isn't a natural holding player, so to get the best out of him you do need someone who can sit. Since Barry left (and I don't count Besic as being an option), there's really only Schneiderlin left in the squad who can fill this role.

So, to me at the moment, it's a question of Scheiderlin and one of Davies or Gueye (or both if we're being very defensive). The combination of Davies and Gueye would be very energetic, but neither of them have what I would call great positional sense - I remember when Schneiderlin was out at the back end of last season and Gueye and Davies had to play together, it was evident that neither of them had that natural inclination to sit in and plug gaps - they both wanted to go and win the ball.

I love Gana, but it's clear how much more Davies drives us forward and is capable of seeing and executing more telling forward passes than Gueye, so on the basis that I'm not convinced he and Davies are a compatible combination, I'd opt to have Gueye on the bench at the moment, at least in the home games against sides we need to beat.

The thing is, if he made a sideways pass to Schneiderlin that happened to also roll forward by about an inch, that would be classed as a "forward" pass. Opta stats are literally meaningless, have you ever wondered why Jordan Henderson tops all the passing stats every season?

They aren't meaningless.

In certain situations they're extremely useful and help build up a good foundation to see how players are doing and debunk certain myths.

However, in this instance, we all know Gueye wasn't up to his usual self. I'm sure he does and Koeman does as well.

That's just ridiculous. So he's everywhere on the pitch because he lacks positional discipline? Do you have any idea what tactics we are using?

That's his game, yes. It's a big bonus in a lot of ways but it's not always right. It's why he was dropped for a few matches at the end of last season - not because he's bad, he's just a very specific type of player whose role isn't always the right one

This spot on.

In the next two games, I don't think Gana should start.

I think the midfield two should be MS and Davies. They're games we should have the ball at least 60% of the time and should dominate.

This 100% ... well not 100%... I mean I agree with the bit about football not being a stats game... drives me nuts when people use stats... you can literally use stats to back up any point of view ... even contradicting ones
