Bit of an impasse here, Gueye obviously wants PSG to pay him x amount of his contract so that he can leave for Everton. PSG seem to be in no mood to do so. It seems likely to go to the wire because PSG can afford to hold out, they don't need to save the relatively small, by their standards, amount of wages Gueye wants them to pay, so, either Gueye accepts this and agrees to just leave, Everton decide that they want him enough to make up the money in a signing on fee, or, what may well be the most likely outcome, Gueye refuses to accept his financial situation with PSG, Everton refuse to take on the cost of this and Gueye sits on PSG's bench until the end of his contract for spite.

For my money, if we can afford it, I would prefer us to bring in Garner than Gana. If he doesn't work out, and I think he would work out, we could recoup a lot of our money by selling him on. I certainly wouldn't want Gueye on crazy wages or a contract any longer than one year with an option. My misgivings with Gueye are based on the fact that at his age and with his playing style, I am not sure he would be able to function effectively in the premier league any more.

That's a farce if true. PSG having our pants down here.

Our reputation in the market across Europe still precedes us, it seems. This clubs business under Walsh, Koeman et al has a lot to answer for...

This is what Thelwell is having to work with ?‍♂️

Maybe they think PL teams can afford it, or maybe PSG think we played hardball over the fee. Maybe more bull by supposed journalists trying to fill columns. But it's getting to the point where Everton should tell PSG, no thanks and move on, maybe we have if the Garner rumours are true.

We sold him to them for 29 million quid 3 years ago so of course they want something for him even if it's just to save face. Just get it effin sorted Everton and stop faffing about.

Always interesting with PSG and midfielders.

January 2019 they were linked with several. They wanted to sign Doucoure from Watford, but he had a £50M price tag. Both 2019 transfer windows they were linked to Allan and there were talks of €50-60M bids. They looked at Gueye in the January window, but Everton refused to sell without getting a replacement in.

The midfielder they ended up signing was Paredes. Tuchel was neither impressed or a happy man after a disastrous transfer window. It did not take long before Director of Football Antero Henrique was replaced.

In the summer 2019 they ended up signing Gueye from Everton. In addition to Ander Herrera that was out of contract.

January 2020, months after signing Herrera and Gueye, there were still reports of PSG wanting to buy Allan from Napoli.

Summer of 2022 they terminate the contract with Herrera, send Paredes to Juventus on loan and seem deperate to get rid of Gueye. All while Antero Henrique is back in the club and responsible for outgoings.

Not convinced.

Three years ago we saw an energetic Liverpool midfield running like crazy and causing every team massive problems. This season, still with midfielders such as Milner, Henderson and Fabinho, their midfield has been overrun and in periods bullied in three out of three matches.

Players that used to stand out for their running, work off the ball and for covering so much ground dont stand out anymore. Because the average midfielder runs more and works harder.

This summer Aston Villa signed a French international to strengthen their midfield. To take minutes from a Brazil international. Wolves signed a third Portugal international midfielder that had interest from a lot of big clubs. Fulham signed a DM that has played 14 times for Portugal since he got his first cap just over a year ago. Nottingham has signed a Belgium international, a Swiss international, a Senegal international and two of the best prospects from Championship last season for their midfield (+ LIngard). Leeds have started the season with a new, young, hungry and highly energetic midfield that has impressed everyone.

The idea of signing a 33 year old part timer to come in and fix Evertons midfield problems seems very optimistic.
Of course signing Gana wouldn't fix our problems. No single player in the world would. But it would be an improvement - possibly a small one - hence the price needs to be right.

I’ve spent longer on the throne than this transfer saga has lasted.

Chill out. We all know it will get done at 11.59pm on TDD.

For me it is about system or formation.

I expect Everton to continue to play with 3 central defenders. With an extra defender, you do not need the same defensive output from your midfield. While it is more important what midfielders can do with the ball. Especially in 343 where the midfielders often are outnumbered.

Both Spurs and Chelsea have had success with 343 and seems happy to sit back and give away possession. My concern is that Everton do not have the individual qualities needed to succeed with that.

Gueye is not terrible with the ball, but we should all remember all the matches he went hiding his last stint at the club. Game management and being able to switch gear during matches have never been strengts of him. Playing him as a midfielder in 343 means accepting to have maybe 40% possession as average over the season. Needing to score first in all matches to get a result.

The ability to control matches and keep the ball is massively underrated.

He would be much better suited to play in a three man midfield. But he can not play as a 6 in a three. And do we really need a destroyer type midfielder as an 8 when we play with three CDs?
