2018/19 Idrissa Gueye

I just don't get why PSG want him.

Sorry.

Only thing I can think of is that they have the likes of Neymar and Mbappe forward.... therefore, they will not need ANYTHING from Gana going forward..... unfortunately, we do not have that luxury. We actually need our CMs to be able to contribute both defensively and offensively.

I'd love it if the PSG news is true!!

Gomes is obviously first choice. And there is reason to believe, given Silva's past with Dacoure, that he likes someone who can break up the game and take the team forwards 15-20 yards.

So if the rumours are true and Gueye may be off, why would we be after Barrios if he's very similar? That's a genuine question given i've seen Barrios play once so no nothing about him.

Surely it would be the perfect opportunity to bring in what Silva wants? Rather than sticking with the formula he doesn't but he inherited so is making do?

I've not seen the figures but just from watching the game on Saturday i'd say he must have made about 100 successful passes. For some reason people have got a lot more hung up on the 10 or so unsuccessful ones.

111 attempted, 90% accuracy (so spot on with a 100 passes!)

61 passes in the opposition half, with 85% accuracy.

Top for successful passes and attempted passes.

Or - this is crazy but bear with me - we could try to bring in somebody who combines some of his skillset with a little bit more quality on the ball. All i'm trying to say is those advocating just letting him go because of what he can't do, and not taking any notice of what he can do, are being very naïve indeed.

I've said numerous times i'd like a better all round player in there, but people making out like we wouldn't miss his energy, work rate and ability to actually win the ball back (not just break up play like many defensive players but actually take it off someone and gain possession) are way off in my opinion.

Hahaha... "bear with me".

Oh no... Please don't go too fast, I won't be able to keep up with your lightning wit and observation skills.

And all because I see the logical floor in the argument that Gueye, who struggles against poorer opposition, would actually thrive against teams who press high and are more composed on the ball.

You are right about 1 thing though, we need an improvement on Gueye.

Barrios isn't similar to Gueye from what I've seen mate. He does like to break play up, but doesn't really offer much going forward. He's more of a 'sitter' who has a dig and then passes 10 yards.

Would the fact he's a sitter mean he's more suited to the 6 that Silva wants? Not sure how expansive his passing range is but putting him in the middle to hold shape with Gomes and Sigurdsson either side as 8's sounds more like what Silva wants.

Would also like to add that I've seen 1 minute of a youtube compilation and some of the Libertadores final, but anyone who lays the head on "Hendo" is alright in my book.

Can be easily replaced.

40m for a 30 year old who can't pass 5 yards is a no brainer. We will be a far better team after he leaves and we go through the minor teething problems of tweaking the system.

I like how we disregard how age works when we want to make a point, poor Gueye has just lost 8 months of his life here to try and emphasise the point on an internet forum that he isn't needed.

He can't be easily replaced though Tim.

These types of players don't grow on trees. And the best ones don't come to an average side.

Sure, we could try for a poor man's Gana, and be in the same boat, except they aren't as good defensively. But what's the point?

We need a Doucoure/Ndombele class player to push us on - do either of those look likely to come in the middle of the season. Are there others out there? Sure, but are they going to be available.

You do not sell your best players in the middle of the season.

With the current players in the side, and their fragile mentality, selling Gana will only highlight the lack of quality elsewhere. If we get in 6 or 7 far better players in other positions, then Gana being upgraded will see us becoming a far better team.
