I hate Liverpool football club!

….it was Tom Saunders who ended up working closely with Paisley.

I was in class one day and the school secretary came in and said I was wanted by the Headmaster. I had no idea, went into his room and surprised to see my Dad sitting with Tom and the Headmaster, they’d obviously found where my Dad worked on the Docks and got him before approaching me.

The Head gave me the rest of the day off school, my Dad went back to work, Tom took me to Anfield & then Melwood to meet Shankley and Paisley. Tom was close to Liverpool Boys and apparently they’d tipped him off that plenty of clubs were asking but in particular Everton. I’m sure that’s why they were so keen to sign me.

Great story.

I dont know what year that was but I've read in a book called 'Passing Rhythms' that Everton and Liverpool - maybe as late as the 50s - tended to carve up the college system along religious lines. 🤷‍♂️

He’ll be gone within a year, but if he had a choice to come here he would have been better staying at Bournemouth anyway. They have Europe and a supportive fan base.

…’71 I think, Dave. Certainly no religion involved then.

Funny story; My Dad was RC, my Mum CoE so I was christened and attended CoE infant/junior. Passed 11+ back then and went to High School but it had no religious connection. Obviously played for Liverpool Boys but one day received a letter saying I’d been selected for Liverpool Catholic Schoolboys. Never knew there was such a thing.

I went to my Head, told him the situation and the fact I was CoE. He said you’re representing the school so have to play. My Mum thought it was so amusing because the game was on 17th March against Manchester Catholic Boys at Holly Park. I remember it finished 0-0. Can’t be many CoE played for Catholic Schoolboys

I don't hate anyone and I'm generally a nice guy but I really hate the rs, and I also hate the people who've owned us since John Moores as they've let the rs get miles ahead of us. It doesn't mean we can't catch them again though.
A lot of hate there from someone who doesn't hate anyone...?

I always will. But I realised a few years ago, especially around the Kenwright/Moshiri/FSW/Dyche era that I actually hate Everton more!

If Iraola ends up there, I just despair. If the Friedkins have an ounce of vision & ambition, they’d have had him boxed of months ago.

Another year of the Moyesasaurus it is then.

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum my ar5e!
I just googled that. The translation reads "no satisfaction without my arse". Quite the boast.

Tbh, I think most clubs are "just happy to float." They know that the top 3 or 4 almost certainly have the league and champions league places tied up, and unless pre-occupied with Europe, they usually get the domestic cups too. Below that group, the league is extremely competitive and it is very easy to be dragged into a relegation fight if you get a few decisions wrong or lose key players. The financial gap between that middle-chasing group and the top 6 tends to be much bigger than it is amongst the rest and the minnows, with FFP/PSR intended to preserve the status quo and not allow anyone else to break into the elites. Some clubs are built on a very solid recruitment system that they seem to be able to drop almost any competent coach into, and still get good results. Some seem to be more reliant on getting the right manager to run the lot. We've come through years of poor investment, recruitment and resultant weak/dysfunctional squads.... into a slightly more stable period. Hopefully that can be built upon.

A calm, considered post. Makes a nice change. Thanks!

I wish I could beat that anecdote.

I did get chosen to compete in the Liverpool Catholic Schools sports day in the Long Jump, and finished second to last.

I think there was a lot of cheating going on though...
