Howard

He's a mediocre goalie who in an ideal world would be replaced by a consistently good one but there really aren't that many about and i'd rather keep him than replace him with another mediocre one who cost more than we would sell him for, If that makes sense.

Crap at crosses( rarely comes for them) and hardly ever holds onto a shot, preferring to punch or palm the ball away often back to the opposition are his worst faults for me.

there's not too many great ones in the world tbh.

i mean lloris is supposedly one of the best, but he's all over the shop.

neuer and courtois are class acts. i'd quite like begovic here and would have take the RS one, not for the money they paid though.

a lot in the prem are good shot stoppers, but not much more, howard included. i think the mccarthy lad from reading would be a decent keeper alongside robles for a good few years to come, but we don't need to think about that this summer.

Maybe Chelsea will be willing to loan courtois out to a premier league side next season.

I don't think it's our biggest problem but a decent loan would be nice

Yeh I agree mate Lloris is overated makes loads of mistakes but can be excellent as well. Neuer is prob the best there is at the moment,at least that I've seen. Not seen much of Courtois and Bergovic looks decent but as you say they would be overpriced much for us to even consider and the rest that i know of look pretty mediocre.

I honestly think people over rate keepers, most keepers have their faults, its a tough position to play.

Look at Liverpool with Mignolet, they spent 9-10m on him in the summer and he has cost them points, I'd rather we spent the money on the outfield 10 than replacing Howard who in my mind has had a good season.

The only keeper I'd be happy replacing him with at the minute is Begovic but he would cost a fortune.

I would agree that its a tough position to play and most have their faults but I'd have to disagree about overating keepers its probably the most important position on the field for me. All the good teams from the Prem have all had a good keeper, Arsenal Seaman, Man Utd schmeichel and Van der Sar Chelsea Cech even Blackburn had Tim Flowers and Man City have Hart who although has made an alarming number of mistakes I would still consider a good keeper. so we have a bit of a pattern here good keeper can help you win the title.

Nil Satis and all that...for we would never have won those trophies without him:

Yeah true but the current barren years would still be empty if we had the best goal keeper in the world, Howard will win us more points that he wil lose for us

I said it in the top 4 thread. If we had Southall in his pomp. Or Czech or some one like that we would be worth an extra 10 points or so. As some one said they are hard to come by. Hardly ever see a post match review saying howard was unstoppable. He is good. Just not a top one. If we had we would be closer to 4th. But we'd wanna sort our goal scoring before our keeping.

Don't quite agree. I agree with Jay here:

Those extra 10 points can mean Champs League football, which we desperately need to kick on.

Tim Howard shaved his beard before the December 8th fixture against Arsenal.

Pre-beard form: 7-6-1, 27 pts
Post-beard form: 5-3-4, 18 pts

Think it speaks for itself lads.

ha, lukaku has barely played since the dreads went, hasn't scored anyway. pienaar has been very average since the dreads went.

cadamarteri still hasn't scored a prem goal since his went

If he hadn't fluffed that freekick, we wouldn't have lost.

Should we hunt a high-end keeper in the summer?

Oh come on, it's hardly fair is it. Arguably, you could look at Baines, or Distin, who were meant to be marking Terry. At the same time, despite having an extended period without a clean sheet... you can't really fault the fella this year, including today, after all, he did make that crackin double save in the second half, which is arguably not sticking in your memory.

I'm quick to fault players if i think they're not doing enough, or good enough, but Howard today didn't have a bad game. He's certainly on my list of players to replace, but that's behind the list of Striker, Pienaar, Osman and then him. He's been a great player for us this season, especially in the first half of the season.

I don't know how you can say he didn't have a bad game. He turned a hard fought point and good performance into a demoralising loss. He's not good enough.

Ok he is a great shot stopper and those save you mention were shot stoppers on his line - cue he does not command his box from set pieces or if a through ball is put through he is like Bostick glue on his line - we have a good defence but ask your self why we never clear set pieces easily is the lack of faith of TH behind them - Naismith won nearly all our defensive headers from set pieces yesterday - a new keeper and Duffy and Stones at the back would be the future with a new Keeper - Robles looks better commanding his box than TH to me! He has only let 1 goal in the FA cup as well and was great v Stevenage with some super saves!

To blame Howard for yesterday's loss is daft, jags shouldn't have lunged in to give the ref a decision to make over the free kick in the first place, also distin went to sleep just as much as Howard did. It's a shame, because all 3 had a great game that incident apart.
