Deeply saddened by this news.

Described by Sir Philip Carter as "a true blue through and through" You can't say better than that.

Lots of posts here on his management success - all appropriate and true. The 1985 side were unstoppable

I'd rather add to this my memories of him as a player. Think he recollected years later that when he knew Everton were in for him as a Preston player, he thought "You don't say no to Everton"

I love that sentiment.

I was lucky enough to be at his first game for us. Evening match. I was very young but wasn't impressed. Seemed to spend all his time on his backside. I can still see the mud on his shorts.

Later of course he was in the engine room of the most inspiring Everton side I ever watched. If you think of the three players in that midfield they all had something different. Curly was in a class of his own of course. Harvey was the most thoughtful of the three.....trying always to change the angle of attack to wrong foot the opponents. The cross field pass was a particular favourite.

HK was perhaps even more committed than Ball to attack. Whereas Ball was instinctive, Howard always had his head up looking forward.....and berating colleagues who didn't see the opportunities that he could. He probably took that all out commitment into management.

I also recall a bicycle kick to score a good goal at the Park End.....Ipswich?

Remember the story of one of our big games in the 80s? Howard opens the dressing room window so that the players could hear the fans chanting as they waited for the game to start. "Go and win it for them"

Even Kenny Dalglish has felt moved to comment. Thanks Kenny.

Howard was truly one of us. I hope we all honour him appropriately today and into the future.

Thank you Howard.

Heard on the car radio this morning, I was in tears. 69, no age. There are legends and there are legends.

Howard was playing in the first Everton game I ever went to. He lived for many years in the same road in Freshfield as my grandparents. I remember being amazed as a youngster when my granddad would casually say good morning and smile to him when passing him.

I am so upset, really choked by this. RIP you great man.

Weird, sad coincidence that 3 of the greatest figures in EFC history - Kendall, Dixie & Catterick all died on an EFC home matchday.

Dixie died at the Goodison derby match in 1980.

Catterick died on the day of the Ipswich FA QF in 1985.

Kendall today, day of Utd game.

The word legend is to easily used in today's game

In Howard Kendalls case, he is what we would a True Legend

RIP
