How far off are we from replicating Man City 2010/11 (top 4 finish)

I think that signing Sigurdson is only a matter of time personally.
I also think that signing Giroud is 50 : 50, so definitely possible.
Without the Europa I think that we would be in with a shout, but think that this year we will find it out of reach but definitely closer to, and possibly actually in, the top 6.
Lets enjoy the ride anyway.

We'd need to get into the CL, give a good showing and then qualify again with another good showing before we move to the next category of players. One season qualifiers are not that big a pull to players with established CL credentials.

Leicester signed Slimani...

I actually think it's the opposite. There are more teams competing at the top, but the standard of those teams is lower. You only have to look at how English teams do in Europe. That season we had 3 teams in the quarter finals of the CL, with Man Utd making the final. Last year, the only quarter final team was Leicester (ffs), with just one team the year before that too, and none the year before that. The PL is competitive, but not very strong.

Maybe, but the overall quality is not the issue, it's the number of teams of similar quality that is the problem. We might be able to get close to them, but we're not gonna become better than 3 of them overnight...

We haven't really had a chance to assess how good our new acquisitions are, so there is no real way of knowing. For example, Sandro could turn out to be world class for us, or he could end up being another Deulofeu. If the majority of the new players are up to the level that we hope then I honestly don't think we are too far off. A lot of the difference comes down to expectation, mental approach and attitude as much as it does to technical ability.

City have had some success but for all their gazillions they haven't set the world on fire. We will hopefully do better, with less.

That's a good point, the window is far from over so we may be able to add some top quality additions that people haven't though of yet. It doesn't always take as many as 3 or 4 stars in the team to achieve a high league position either. For example, when the RS came 2nd the other year their only stand out star player was Suarez. Man United won the league when van Persie was on fire but the rest of their team didn't have as many good individual players as say Chelsea this season with Kante, Costa and Hazard.

I do think we're a bit of a way off at the moment but City had to build gradually themselves. They started out going after the likes of Robinho who was ineffective in this league and then moved on to Aguero. We're a long way away from attracting players like him but if we get the right players in it doesn't always have to be a star name. I am hoping we push on this season and at the very least battle for 5th/6th and go far in the Cups.

even mancity arent guaranteed a top 4...hell even top 6 in the current league. if we fill a gap or 2 in our squad (CB striker) we would be competitive in the top 7.

Wanting to be as good as Man City...jeez, how our ambitions have changed since '86

Now I feel depressed

It is what it is and we're not in the 1980's anymore. There is a large percentage of our fanbase who have never seen us win a trophy and a large percentage (myself included) who have only seen us be as successful as Swansea and Wigan and less successful than Leicester.

Depressing would be supporting Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest or Leeds who will all be turning up to watch their side play Burton Albion next season.
