How far off are we from replicating Man City 2010/11 (top 4 finish)

Comparing our spending power to city ffs.

If we sign that Balde away from inter for £30 million on £160k+ a week deal then I might believe it. Right now we are doing nothing but consolidating 7th.

We still need a ST, LM and CB (and LB which won't happen) to in all honesty have a starting 11 good enough to challenge the top 4.

Giroud
Siggurdsson
Van Dijk/Koulibaly
Tierney

If we went out and got those deals done I'll start to believe.

Now obviously Moshiri does not have the wealth of Sheikh Mansour.

I didn't claim our spending power was comparable though.

I agree with your other comments and that is what I was interested in, to see just how many players others felt we would need to bring in to be able to compete with a side like theirs back in 10/11.

There are some players in their side that I would say aren't in the top bracket though. Hart, Richards, Lescott, De Jong, Johnson. But as quite a few people have mentioned, the quality from their key players appears to be far superior at the moment. The likes of Silva, Kompany, Toure and Tevez. I'd like to think we will bring in a suitable striker to replace Lukaku's goals (with Sandro and Rooney contributing too) and then due to the competition for the top 6, I would imagine it would still take a couple of seasons to be in a position to try and attract players of the calibre of Silva and Toure and even then it will be difficult.

Since Moshiri came in, a lot of Evertonians have expected us to spend big and the clear ambition is for us to try and break in to the Champions League Places by finishing in the top 4. Now obviously Moshiri does not have the wealth of Sheikh Mansour, but I think it is interesting how they gradually improved their team and squad over a few seasons to get to be challenging for that top 4. They did not immediately bring in the big names they have now and they weren't always capable of attracting the top players, very much like the position we are in now.

In 2008-09 City came 10th, and then 5th in 09-10 and 3rd in 2010-11 which is the season I am concentrating on.

In their first home game of that season they beat the RS 3-0 and this was their starting line up:

--------------------------Hart------------------------

Richards------Kompany----K Toure--------Lescott

------------------------De-Jong----------------------

Milner--------Toure--------------Barry-----Johnson

------------------------Tevez------------------------

How do you think our first 11 compares to that and how many of our current team would get in that? I'd say Coleman, Gueye and Schniederlin would all be worthy of a start in that team. It is worth noting that there were 3 key players on the bench for that game too: Zabaleta, Silva, and Adebayor.

There are certain similarities in the 2 teams in my opinion. Hart back then was a young English goalkeeper like Pickford, but Hart had more experience at that point. Lescott was a big money signing in defence like Keane is for us, but you can see that the team there is not full of the likes of Aguero. It's clear there though that their team does have some real quality in it and i'm not sure that we have as much in our first 11 as they do there and the league is possibly stronger now.

I personally think our squad is starting to look very good but we would need a big name signing to replace Lukaku who can score us 15-20 goals to be in with a shout of a top 4 finish in my opinion.

We only have Barry, so we're 10 short

You can't compare anyone at Everton to the likes of Tevez, Toure, Silva and Kompany.

Probably have to go as far back as Kanchelskis to name a player who would fit that bracket.

City were taken over by Shiniwatra in 2007. That year they spent £66 million. In the summer of 2008 Sheik Mansour bought city and in the windows up to when they finished top four in 2011 they spent £397 million. We're a fair bit behind the curve.

Also the top of the table is far more competitive now than in 2011.

7th for me again but an improvement on last season considering europa league ! will be until we sign some signature players !

Since its introduction, only 15% of teams who play in the Europa league finish in the top 4. As others have mentioned the top of the league is stronger and therefore it is going to be a big ask.
