How did you become an Evertonian?

I got signed by Davey Moyes

Now I get to sit and watch Everton every week.

My earliest memory is of my (Red Manc) older brother taking me to see the 1969/70 team play Rovers at Milltown, as champions, in summer 1970 - I had just turned 5.

I was obsessed with Alan Ball, and clearly remember being shocked as a Rovers player was treated for a very bloody head injury, right beside where I was sitting (on the low white wall in the Reserved terrace) beside the dugout.

I clearly remember turning to my brother and saying 'Sure Alan Ball didn't do that?'

My parents bought me probably the greatest present ever - a full Everton kit (round-collar|), with an iron-on number 8 - for my birthday. It came in a white cardboard box, with soft tissue covering the shirt, shorts and white socks. I was so proud. That must have been May 1971.

I also have memories of telling my Junior and Senior Infants teacher (1969-71) with whom I was in love, that I was gong to marry her, and that I was inviting Harry Catterick to come to the wedding!!
:)

Needless to say I was heartbroken when the Catt sold Bally in December 1971. Again I have a clear memory of coming home from school and the news had broken on the Lunchtime BBC bulletin. My poor mother had to break the news and I cried my eyes out.

I actually 'followed' Bally to Arsenal for the rest of that season, but the most commitment I made was asking for a small Arsenal kit bag - I never got a scarf, jersey or anything else of Arsenal hue.. I also don't think I ever put pictures on my bedroom wall of Bally in Arsenal colours, but kept the Goal! and Shoot! pictures of the 69/70 Everton squad and various others all the time.

I returned to the fold for 72/3 and ever since.
Loved bally, even bought a pair of white boots from jack sharpes in town, happy days.

I grew up in a largely football-free house. My grandmother was a blue (for old-school sectarian reasons we won't get into here) so that was my team.

Then my brother married into a red family and decided he liked football. Then my dad retired and became a die hard red with all his newfound spare time. Now I have a red family and it sucks.

My dad tried to get me into football early on but I showed very little interest so gave up trying after a while. Probably a good thing by then as this was 93-94 season. Following year I walked in during the semi final against Spurs and became a bit obsessed, probably annoying my dad as he thought I'd escaped the endless anxiety that it is Everton Football Club.

FA Cup aside, school was not a good time to be an Everton fan circa 1995-2004

Two Gary Stevens.

I was watching a kids Saturday morning programme in the 80s and a footballer (Gary Stevens) was on the show impressing me with his ball juggling.

Wow, I thought - I wonder who he plays for.

Eager to satisfy my curiosity I asked my Dad who hadn’t been watching the programme “Who does Gary Stevens play for?”

“Everton and England” he replied.

Wow, I thought. “What colour are Everton?”

“Blue” he said.

“That’s my favourite colour, I’m gonna support them” I said.

And so it was, I was an Everton fan from Essex all because of Gary Stevens.

A while later I was reading my weekly Match magazine and made a shocking discovery.

There were two Gary Stevens and the one I’d seen on tele actually played for Tottenham not Everton.

But - We do not choose, we are chosen and somehow or other I was chosen.

So - thanks to Gary, my Dad and the colour blue for all the memories I’ve had so far.

I’ve moved from Essex now and have had my ST for many years and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

A trophy would be nice though. 😀

To be awkward and different as my dad is a RS fan. It backfired as I have only seen us win the FA Cup in 95. As much as I hate that lot, I wouldn't make the same mistake again, it's been a constant struggle supporting us.

This thread has been done of course but so what.

How did ye? Were ye born into it through family or did Everton find you later? Tell us.
I was the blue sheep of the family.
Most of the family were red in name only...like none church goers but would still put RC or CofE on a form
There was a blue side of the family minor in numbers but actual match goers
When I was 8, first day in primary school, me and 2 other kids got gripped at play time and asked red or blue
Blue said Mike...Ok said the big kids
You?
Blue said Arthur...again OK, turns out later they actually were
You?
Being quick on the up take I said
Blue.

One boxing day in the 50s all the men decided to get out away from women and little kids, I was deemed old enough to go.
I walked up those Gwladys St steps and was totally blown away, I'd never seen an space so enclosed yet so big
With green grass and massive to me blue criss cross stands
I was hooked
