Horse Racing

….i’ve found my Cheltenham ante-post book building a bit difficult this year. I normally have all those at the head of the market for novice hurdles (supreme, Turners & Bartlett) boxed off at lovely prices but Mullins and the Irish might be having one of those seasons and there’s a few from UK that I didn’t capture. Hopefully it pans out ok but I have a few ‘holes’ in my book.

Generally the races look more open than normal.

Most firms are now offering Non-Runner No Bet, so I’ve been concentrating on Handicaps this last month or so. Handicap entries are out on Tuesday, there will be horses entered for multiple races but NRNB does allow you to get involved in the knowledge that you get your stake back if your selection doesn’t turn up.

The handicaps are so competitive it’s difficult to determine ‘tips’. This morning I sent @Ivo one that was given to me for the Pertemps in December and is still available at 25-1, but all I know is that he’s in good order and the race is a target.

Tuesday is a big day, if I think on I’ll post anything of interest I’m told.

I generally prefer most of the handicaps to the novice races, the Triumph Hurdle and the Champion Bumper.

Ones I am looking out for this year are Herakles Westwood ( Warren Greatrex ) in either the Ultima or the Fulke Walwyn/ Kim Muir at around 14 or 16/1. And also last year's second in the Ultima, The Changing Man ( Joe Tizzard ) though he's not listed in the betting for that race.

Add on Nurse Susan ( 12/1 ,Dan Skelton ) for what used to be the Coral Cup, and Murcia (8/1, Willie Mullins ) for the County Hurdle.

Is the 25/1 horse for the Pertemps Hurdle Letos, trained by Tony Mullins? He qualified by finishing second at Carlisle in December, and avoided any increase in his handicap rating afterwards.

…yes, it’s Letos Jay.

…..handicap entries closed at midday, literally 3mins later I reads a message that it looks like JP McManus only has one entry in the Martin Pipe; Kel Histoire and it’s 33-1 NRNB. Quickly put a few bob on and 5mins later it’s been cut to 12-1. Crazy, bookies take no chances.

Looks like Letos has the Pertemps entry.

These handicaps are impossible but it’s good to have a few at big odds that hopefully give a run for monies.

I think a bloke called Will Hill is on this forum, as soon as you mention a fancy the price is cut in half ;)

….ha, ha, they were a stand-out price for Lecky so it was bound to go.

There is another GN 50-1 shot that a few shrewdies are putting up after yesterday’s weights were published - Gorgeous Tom (50-1 generally available). Trained by Henry de Bromhead, could be a lively one and bound to be shorter if he turns up, maybe one for @tommye 😄

…..must reiterate, this is not a tip.

Cheltenham handicaps are impossible, everything is trying but a bloke I chat with who really knows his stuff gave me Zanndabad yesterday, currently 25-1 for Martin Pipe at Festival. I won’t make the case, suffice to say his trainer is ‘handicap king’ and it looks like he’s been put away since winning easily at Newcastle in Nov.

Irish trained, owned by a syndicate from Durham I’ve watched his races back and he could be a bit of a plot. I’ve now had a little interest, he’s also entered for Coral Cup for which he’s also 25s so I’ve covered him for that too. With NRNB you get your stake back if he doesn’t turn up.

He’s an interesting one.

According to Racing Post the horse is also entered in the Turners Novice hurdle.
