I have always got the impression that Islam is essentially a primitive religion that the west have only really been exposed to in the past 20 years, with immigration being much larger in scale.

It's clear Islam is quite sexist in the way it views women. Someone I work with who is Islamic by descent cannot be photographed, cannot date (have to marry instantly), has to cover head etc. No matter how you explain out of that, women to cover up and be treated as less than equal is primitive by modern standards.
I don’t want to sound patronising here, it’s a genuine question. But how old are you? We had the Gulf War in 1991. We had the carving up of the Middle East after WW2. If we want to go back really far we had the Crusades. And this is just Islam in the Middle East. To say the West has only been exposed to it in the past 20 years is mental. 9/11 was just over 20 years ago and the West was well aware of Islam then.

You also mention Islam in regards to immigration. Which specific countries are you talking about because there are Muslims all over the World? Britain has had immigration from African and Asian Muslims for way longer than 20 years ago.

I'm not old enough to remember any of that!

From a kid growing up you get directly exposed to different cultures, religions , ways of life. I can say honestly Islam was never in my walk of life. There were plenty other cultures and religions I was exposed to, my best friend in primary school was asian for example. I went to different schools growing up as well in different areas, so Chinese, Indian, Pakistani , African, knew a kid from all sorts of background.

Muslim not so much , I can tell you for a fact though in both my kids schools they do have families that are.

I know Islam would have been in this country before the last 20 years but it was never on such a big scale as that period. You can actually map it out because when the tabloids were constantly running the anti Muslim stories during the 2000s , about halal meat and Sharia law and all the rest of it , that's when you got such an increase in this country.

From a nationalist perspective I don't mean to talk about that in any negative way, this certainly isn't the country to worry about different cultures ingrained! Maybe I'm too young to have noticed it before but things such as Muslim clothing I have no recollection of growing up but see it on a daily basis now. It obviously was here before , person in work didn't just start wearing head scarves in the last 20 years.

We've got a lot to thank from people of the Islamic faith : 400,000 fought for Britain in WW1, approximately 5 million fought for the allies in WW2. You don't hear this from war fetishists.

There is no doubt that post 9/11 people became more aware of “Muslims”. And by that I mean people that are identifiable as Muslims based on dress alone. And they became an easy target for Western governments.

I think what is massively important is to firstly not judge someone based on their religious adherence. I’m an atheist. I will not put someone down for thinking something different to me, same way I would hope they wouldn’t put me down for what I think.

Secondly there is a huge spectrum within every belief. On this topic of hijab’s specifically, there will be some women who feel forced into it. There will also be women that find it empowering and a sign of their religious faith. We might not agree with it but in some situations it is 100% their choice.

I just like that the advert is in English so presumably being an EU poster, there must be a big need for it in Ireland or Malta?
