Harry Caterick or Howard Kendall?

Strange thing about greatness is it often has humble beginnings. The first time Harvey, Ball and Kendall played together was at Goodison VS Southampton in the old 1st division on 18 March '67.......Southampton beat us 1-0!

From little acorns and all that.

Heart say Harry, head says Howard.

The Cup Winners Cup may or may not be the tie breaker

1st Title; 62-63 Vs 84-85

Harry had some good players to work with from Carey
Howard started from a lower baseline

Harry had Moores to under right the transfers, he didn't pay for them all like chelsea or city, he just stood guarantor. The Club still had to service the loans.
Howard got lucky...no? well actually yes ( He got as near as damn it ) full seasons out of 3 perennial sicknotes Reid, Sheedy and Gray.

2nd Title; 69-70 Vs 86-87

Harry was the one who started from a low(ish) baseline this time, only Labone and West survived from 63. Harry had in the meantime though been getting in plenty of youth, with the addition of 3 key transfers, Ball, Kendall and.... the key man Tommy Jackson, (a bargin on a par with Coleman )

Howard however had only a 1 season gap and the most of his championship side to base things on, key transfers ( for buttons ) Paul Power, Wayne Clarke. TBH, it seemed to be a very 'meh' season for outstanding sides, we could be seen as the best of an, if not poor bunch, more the best of an uninspiring bunch, but that said we still had to win it.

My take on the 4 titles...

4th, by a length, 86-87

3rd, by a short head, 62-63

Deadheat, 69-70, 84-85

*Now mixes metaphors in mid stream

To solve the dead heat we need to let the 2 teams play a mega snooker type play off.

The 69-70 team would've scored more 147's, but the 84-85 team would've won more of thre close low scoring frames.

20-19 to the 84-85 side, they just seemed to hate losing.

So you pays your money and takes you chances...and when it comes down to paying your money (to watch ) I will go with my heart, just, they were just so good to watch.... and they had little curly Ball ( 2nd only to Dixie )

Too close to call. Kendall built us the finest side in Europe at the time and had us at the top of the English game for a good three years or so. That would probably have continued had Heysel not occurred.
Catterick had greater resources at the time but it still takes talent to build arguably two of the finest footballing sides this country has ever see in 1963 and 1970 (the latter taking the title from the mighty Leeds of the time) and he didn't spend too big to create the holy trinity midfield of Kendall, Ball and Harvey.
I suppose I'd give it to Kendall just 'cos he was part of that fabulous midfield.....

Agree with Loz, it's too close to call. Two managers who both built great teams to watch and knew how to win. I'm not going to choose, it's almost as bad as asking to choose between my brother or sister, I love them both.
