Hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.

The best teams press Dave, currently and throughout history. Rinus Michels total Football Teams were masters of it
I'm not against pressing or physical effort of any description. I'm stating that it has to be seen for what it is: a platform to play off.

The tail is beginning to wag the dog in our game's coverage in recent years - the lionisation of basic hard work. And that can make people take their eye off what football is really about: entertainment and creativity, and through that winning football.

Managers like that have a lot of falling outs. That's ok if you're at United - you just isolate and get shut and get a great player in to replace the players alienated. Everton alienate a player like Barkley and we bring in someone is isn't superior.
A strong manager only puts up with prima Donna behaviour when that player is a genuine World Class talent. Cantona at United being a good example. Barkley isn't anywhere near that level and shouldn't be indulged by any Everton manager

Wrong.

I keep telling you, I dont watch Everton to be entertained, entertainment is gained by victory, if I want entertainment I come on here and watch the wolf pack tear you apart.

Leave it to Davek to talk down about hard work.

Agreed there. Explains why the likes of Jordan Henderson get made England captain

Apologies if already mentioned but didn't Deulofeu instagram a picture of that sign? I have no idea why he couldn't cope but I do not think he wasn't aware of that slogan.

How would it be different if football commentary were just another way to send a universalized message to all (think of the children, after all...) of what the approved values of the zeitgeist may happen to be at any particular time? World-class skill is rare, while hard work is pretty common in the world I live in. I wasn't particularly skilled (by my own evaluation) in the area I earned my salt in, but relied on experience, resilience, and dogged persistence to eke out a decent living. That's what I think is driving this, dave.

wheels within wheels. Are these football questions? Well, football is just a tool, but I've never found a lovelier one. When beautiful football doesn't lead to success, we start to question what our goals may be. That's a far bigger question than football.

100 % agreed, That HAS to involve winning matches though. (as you said) But very few teams are able to do both though Dave. Chelsea and Spurs were generally entertaining to watch and won....the rest ??? well Bournemouth were entertaining as was Southampton and Swansea but none actually won anything although Looked pretty on the ball. Deffo a fine line here. I personally don't think we have been exciting to watch since El Bob's first season (moyes's second to last), Thing is, Bob was found out...you need top players to achieve this for a longer period..and I don't include many of our current squad to be up to the task. Pressure and fighting spirit is what we are aiming for at present...So say goodbye to Lukaku, Barkley and Del boy....not fit for purpose...Skillful as you like but very often found wanting when the "going gets tough"....Sorry but I am currently listening to Survivor "eye of the tiger" in the garden

He wasn't asking to be indulged, just treated like everyone else.

Bad politics that's called.

Wrong.

Wherein did I state that entertainment or victory? In fact, I stated that one comes with the other usually.

You cant compare the rest of the world of work with an entertainment industry. People do what they can in everyday life to make things work out without the requirement for inspiration or creativity. The division of labour sees to that. Very few people have the privilege of escaping the mundane.

Football is not called working class ballet for nothing. It should seek to uplift us and its professional practitioners have the job of doing that. If I want runners and jumpers I can see that in track and field.
