Sunderland are a bigger club than Leeds, hence why they've spent about 30 years longer in the top flight.

Maybe losing 3 players to the Afcon might have been a stretch to far...who knows.

I think this is a real consideration, I am uneasy with too many links to African players simply for this reason. Yes it's not every year, but to have a third or more of your starting 11 unavailable for up to 7/8 games in a season is almost accepting whatever target set can't be achieved.
