Let's not kid ourselves, it's massive for England that they're out. Could potentially lead to an easier Quarter Final tie, which is great for us. I just don't think it's a proper rivalry is all. I'm still glad they're out, I just don't hate them

The chest thumping patriotism is intensifying in here. Soz lads, but English people are the only country who aren't allowed support their international football team. This is just a fact
If you're Irish and celebrate St. Patrick's day then there isn't any issue at all. In fact, if you don't celebrate it then it'd probably be seen as incredibly peculiar.

Add to that, if you're Scottish then St. Andrew's holds great reverence and St David's for the Welsh - think of the number of daffodils or what not on show etc.

However, within England there is unfortunately some horrible stigma (bigot? xenophobic? racist?) if you in any way show some pride and patriotism.

Germany got all they deserve today. And it has to come back on Jogi Löw, all that was on him. His managment and coaching of this team in the last few months has been very poor. No excuse today to bring back in players who did nothing to deserve to be in.

I hope Germany make a big brave decision now and move on from him, and move on from some players too. Time for a new coach who won't play favourites as much. Germany have plenty of very good young players ready to move up.

I think you're spot on. I've never seen a team, I don't follow Spain closely so perhaps they did. I'm also relatively young to preface this, go from looking great to just complete and utter crap in the span of what, 6 months?

This side has a lot of miles on their legs, played together for years. I'd be interested in your opinion, who goes, who do you keep?

Laughing a lot. Germany arent as arsed as England because theyve been so dominant.

Every so often my toes curl at this place and wonder what i've created. This is one of them.

England and Germany "not football rivals"

Hahaha.

Good one.

.

I do believe their is some truth to that statement. I'm German American, and even pull for Germany over America. It's tough, because I just know the US isn't going to get it done so why waste the effort.

However, I don't really look at England as a rival. It's more Holland, France, and Italy. I can understand English supporters hating Germany, but I don't think Germans really feel the same way.

England, in football, never really is on our radar. Don't really care about your side, I always root for England. The other three nations, never.

It's not so much about rivalry for me, but more about getting sick to the back teeth of always seeing them up there in the finals. As bad as they were this time around, I still thought they would scrape through with some last gasp bit of luck (as they have in the past), riding on their usual arrogant, entitled belief. Well, even that was missing this time. They looked ordinary, and uninspiring.
I like this world cup, simply because it is becoming so much more unpredictable.

Argentina

By the way, today again showed why the football world cup is so much better than the rugby.... New Zealand would never go out in the Group stages in the rugby.... Football is unpredictable as ****.....still have no idea who's gonna win this, the groups have been entertaining, now roll on the Knock out stages

So it isn't speculation any longer, now we know, Brazil look very good and enter the half of the draw from hell!!

Currently: 2nd in England's Group get to beat (almost certainly) Japan, then beat the winners of Sweden and Switzerland before facing (almost certainly) Spain or Croatia in the semis.

The two halves

(Uruguay, Portugal), (Argentina, France), (Mexico and Brazil), plus 1st in Engs group vs second in group h in one half (Colombia maybe?)

As opposed to

(Spain, Russia), (Croatia, Denmark), (Sweden and Switzerland) plus 2nd in Engs group vs first in group h (Japan maybe?)

The group h part is unknown, Senegal the other alternative, but the rest isn't.

Its nearly as stark as the direst predictions, granted Germany are out but that only gives Brazil an easier passage

The advantages of being in one half of the draw are potentially very very big indeed.

Of course we can lose to anyone anywhere anytime but either England or Belgium will have a very good chance of progression by tomorrow night.

I don't discount the effect and the real gains to confidence and positivity that winning tomorrow would bring and that perhaps being a better way, but just think that half of the draw is so packed with potential winners and top teams that it's likely to be a much greater ask.

We or Belgium couldn't meet Spain until the semis in the other half

Not sure how much confidence will come from beating a second string Belgium side
