Simples. We don't create enough chances and don't put away those we do. We take so long to play from the back that teams have all the time in the world to set their defence, and then we wonder why Kane has no space and is marked by two or three defenders on the few occasions he gets the ball.

Kalvin Phillips had a very good game didn’t he. Miles better than Jordan Henderson.
As baffling as Trippier's inclusion is, besides potential set-piece threat, England have got a lot going for them, from back to front.
Midfield was their downfall in 2018, but none of Rice, Philips or Mount were involved then and it looks as though Henderson has been well and truly eclipsed by Bellingham as well, so they've improved where they needed to.
Sterling is frustrating, but was there for his runs in behind the Croatian defence, who were always going to be deep and compact. To be fair to Southgate, it's precisely that that won England the game. For all his faults, his movement must be a nightmare to deal with.
I doubt this will happen, but hopefully the shackles can come off now that qualification is guaranteed and Scotland take a vicious hiding.

Like most I was impressed by Phillips. I think it is vital that England shuffle the pack next game to keep players fresh. This tournament is going to be brutal physically for those teams that end up in the latter stages.
