Maybe time to dust off the two currency plan and have a Euro A for Northern Europe and a Euro B for Southern Europe/Mediterranean. Devalue Euro B immediately by 25% and let it float. Still keep the single market but operate with 2 currencies.

I think the Yanks are going to step in now and press the EU to sort this mess out and move on and start to lay dow some cash for real growth...which American capital needs and is ready to exploit.

Two currencies plus substantial debt write downs would create growth opportunities for all the "B" currency States. These economies need economic stimuli alongside structural reform. They will only get out of this mess by growing their economies and increasing employment opportunities. Otherwise they'll continue to run deficits and increasing proportions of their populations will live in dire poverty.

They will only get out of this mess by growing their economies and increasing employment opportunities. Otherwise they'll continue to run deficits and increasing proportions of their populations will live in dire poverty.

It would also provide genuine competition within Europe enabling the South to attract new investment in manufacturing, taking advantage of lower costs and a cheaper currency. It would also help re-balance the enormous trade in-balances within the EU, something the Germans in particular have taken huge advantage of throughout the life of the Euro.

Yeah, it would. But the central issue would remain, albeit a bit less toxic. Their economies would still be independent of each other, but they would still be linked to a common currency that is beyond their control.

Granted, the correlation between them would be closer than they currently are with Germany et al, but the power to set interest rates would still be in Frankfurt, (or where ever they are set).

That French bloke had it right when he said a few years back that closer economic and tax union is inevitable under the Euro. He was told to pipe right down though.
