Oh my days.

I've had a very, very lazy couple of weeks with the gym recently, coupled with an abscess in one of my teeth resulting in me not eating a meal for a few days, I've lost a whole stone FFS! I'm weak as anything now.

Has anyone got any tips on cheap ways to get a decent amount of protein and whatever else I need to out on weight/gain muscle? I can't really afford to be buying protein shakes any more. I'm okay on the gym front, I know more or less what I'm doing, it's this supersonic metabolism I have difficulty with!

Ta muchly.

Yep, eat mince. Buy some steak. That will do it.

Why's your metabolism the problem? What's your height, body weight, current strength levels, and how long have you been training?

I thought you were telling me to complain at first!

Looks interesting that stuff though as my appetite does drop sometimes.

I'm a student mate and a skint one at that so I think steak is probably out the question, at least for regularly eating. Mince is a good shout though. I know oats are a good cheap way of getting your carbs in.

My metabolism is only really a problem because I probably don't eat enough when I'm training, If I skip a meal I'll drop a couple of pounds easily. I used to buy protein and instant oats but I can't really afford that now, so was looking for possibly a cheaper way of getting in most of what I need.

I'm around 6 foot 1 and was just over 13 stone, now I'm hovering over 12. I do about 70kg on a flat bench press for a workout, around the same on a lat pull down, so I'm not particularly strong. I've been training for a while but I'm the kind of person who goes for 3 weeks and then has a week off out of pure laziness, which usually undoes most of my hard work. I've never really been that committed to it.

Your metabolisms isn't the problem at this stage. You'll get to a certain level 'clean', and then you'll need to be realistic or consider AAS. Protein shakes don't work, save your money.

Snoop around for bargains at your local store/ super market. They often sell steak at reduced prices when it's due to go off the next day, and freeze it. Lambs hearts are very cheap, 3 for £2 usually. If you're going to buy protein, just buy the cheapest whey protein you can find. As for your weight loss, it's glycogen depletion or the fact you've had a sh*t, you're not losing muscle that fast.

Your main problem is you're weak, and you're either not squatting and deadlifting, or you're not concentrating on them

As for your motivation, if you're not going to stay motivated, you'll always have a problem. How many days a week can you train, realistically, and what days would they be?

Started Insanity workout before xmas but had to stop due to broken toe (footy) - gonna restart it again as I was really starting to see the benefits (1 month in). Anyone else done it (insanity)?

Why don't protein shakes work?

I think they're are a cracking supplement, i struggle to get in 300g of protein a day without them.

But obviously i prefer to get as much of that as proper food

Because you literally just **** them out. You don't need as much protein as you think you do.

Ask your self this, if they worked so great, why isn't everyone walking around at 15 stone plus? You're better off eating real food, and using the odd shake here or there to bump up your protein intake if you genuinely have a problem. You're far better off learning how to get stronger, otherwise you're just wasting your money

How much do you weigh? It's hard to imagine you'd need more than 2g of protein per kg of body weight. A serving of protein powder has about as much protein in it as 1 chicken fillet breast.

As an endurance athlete of 58kg, I get enough protein for my day in 2 chicken breasts. Hard to believe you can't get all the protein you need from a balanced diet.

ie

Cereal + milk = approx 25g of protein
Ham + cheese sandwich = 42g of protein
2 chicken breasts + jacket potato = 70g of protein

3 very simple meals there that'll give you nearly 140g of protein, all for around 1,700 calories.

Forget protein shakes. They're designed to rid you of your money.

Well yeah thats what i mean as in food first, but i think they have a use. If im in a lecutre its easier to have a shake then whipping out chicken and rice

Dunno how much you weigh, but unless you're a truck, 300g is a crazy amount.

Both sedentary and strength training groups were involved. The results showed that 1.4 grams resulted in protein synthesis while there were no changes in the low protein group and, finally, the group that ingested 2.4 grams of protein did not see any more increased protein synthesis than the 1.4 grams of protein group.

That 140g of protein I mention in my very, very simple diet therefore is plenty for someone of Chicos size.

I'm not saying they are perfect. And as ive said ideally food is a lot better. But thats not always possible. And the clue is in the name its a supplement, designed to fit in with your diet. Obviously if you live on them and get no protein carbs etc from other sources youll get nowhere.
