Bad idea. What makes Everton 'Everton' is that the atmosphere isn't forced. We don't have music when goals go in, we don't all shout out players names when the team is read out or they are subbed. We don't all bring flags to the match or wave scarves to get on the telly because we're attention whores.

What we do do is have a reactive, traditional atmosphere. When Goodison is rocking, and when it is a bear pit when the heat is on, there's no other ground like it.

Johnson tried enforced wackiness in the mid 90s with a fans band in the lower Bullens and it lasted about 5 games. People despised it.

Everton is a traditional club and a choreographed singing section with song sheets is simply awful and the height of plastic fakeness.
Nailed it 100%

People go on about the atmosphere being dire, but I've been a season ticket holder for 30 years and see no different from the atmosphere 5/10 years ago compared to now. Some people are getting brainwashed by Sky that crowds have to be these all singing, all dancing public displays, when the reality is most people just want to go to the match and WATCH the game. We're paying to watch, not participate. I mean sure, we do sing occasionally and we celebrate goals etc. But Everton has NEVER been a club with flags/banners/scarves/wackiness at home games.

I replied before your edit further above but must have forgot to quote it so done one of those horrible @ things.

Anyway, for me the last change in atmosphere was mid 90s when reserved seats came in. Prior to then we'd be in the ground singing non stop from half an hour before kick off then a good 20 mins in to the game before it would die down for a bit then there'd be loads more intermittant spells of singing, obvs more or less depending on the match. We didn't do it to be wacky, it was our way way to get behind the team. We are not all the same. Some like to sing as well as watching the match, some don't, it's each to their own.

Re Banners etc, don't care about those, why does everyone lump them into these arguments?

Unsure. I've always hated the idea of a "singing section" but the atmosphere these days is absolutely dire.

I'm not one for the "ultras" section at Palace, for example, but people are going the other way and acting as if anyone singing at the match is an idiot, which is pathetic. If you want to sit quietly and observe, watch it on TV.

Chelsea and penalties against Norwich aside there hasn't been a single good atmosphere at Goodison this season, not even the derby.

Something needs to be done. If it was up to me I'd make the whole of the Lower Gwladys a "singing section" and allow standing (not sure on the rules regarding that). Anyone moaning to the club about swearing, standing, flags etc. gets told to sit somewhere else.

Thought I was on rawk then for a second.

Really? You want to point out where that is happening?

I'll sing my little heart out for 90 minutes+ in the freezing cold in Wolfsburg but I can understand the atmosphere might be differnt if you are a season ticket holder watching your team grind out another 1-1 home draw against a team that you should be beating.

I think it's a combination of stuff. People are (rightly) wary of the Fleet Street/Sky superfan scenario which leads to stuff like the Palace ultras and the Chelsea lawyer. People have got more entitled and the 'matchday' means less these days. And yes, it's probably an older and wealthier segment of society who can afford tickets in general now, even at Goodison.

I have nothing against a singing section and I agree the atmosphere can be dreary. But equally a packed-out Allianz Arena with Munich luvvies singing 'Bayern' at each other at regular intervals as they win their 70th match on the bounce leaves me completely cold.

Those absolute blerts at Crystal Palace are embarrassing. Ultras have never been a thing in English football, it is all so fake and forced.

So for me, it's a no.
But they are not a singing section. There just a group who got to go together and create some noise. They tend to act as a catalyst for most of the ground. The club helps by selling them blocks of tickets for away games which also helps.
Periodically they can take themselves too seriously with banners and political statements but overall our support is better for it.
I would prefer spontaneous noise that flowed with the game but apart from occasionally I can't see that coming back.

There used to be singing sections in every football ground it was called the terraces, all the lids would gather behind the goal and if you didnt like
it you would stand to the side of them,I dont have a problem with a singing section,if you dont like it just avoid that area

if it was introduced there would be guidelines for what was sang for a start, resulting in grief when any obscene stuff was shouted by that section, so basically if you wish to remind say Brentdan of what his son is then you'd be best avoiding that section.
Be some kick offs from anyone displaced to accommodate it as well I reckon.

People saying no. You'd be up for a singing section if knowone else had one and we were the first to do it.. But instead its cringeworthy.. I guess instead of trying to help the atmosphere you'd rather it stay quiet and have away fans taking the p*ss at Goodison!!

I believe in live and let live so the I'm not bothered either way:

If some fans want to go to Goodison and not sing that's up to them. Likewise if some fans want to get organised and sing a tune then that's okeydokedy too.

Saying all that I hate all that corny taped music you get at the likes of Stoke and Hull. That would never work for us.

Anyway, as an aside, how would you get the lumps in the Lower Gladwys to ever read a songsheet? !
