Glasgow/Merseyside?

is the right answer, Hibs for me as well, only because i went up there and it had Hibs and everton painted on a wall, and later on a few of there lads used to come down in the 80,s for some of the more interesting games, dont give a ****e about religion in footy and i think 99% of everton fans feel the same way.

I remember meeting Hibs fans in the Winslow in the 80s. Sound lads !!

I support neither cos the Scottish league is gash. I follow Ayrs results purely cos I went to butlins when I was a kid.

Don't like the shady secretarian aspect of the rivalry. It like the football isn't important.

I agree with your last two sentences.

As for Glasgow, I just fear that they will never have a half-friendly rivalry in my lifetime.

Nonetheless, one of the best experiences of my football supporting days was an evening in a Rangers pub the day after Ireland beat Scotland in Feb 88. About 10 of us green clad Paddies were treated like long lost friends by these bears and like all great experiences it all happened spontaneously.

Then again, I saw the friendly Merseyside derbies in the 80s, especially 84 and 85 until Heysel. We did our best to continue this after Hillsborough - banners, flags, flowers, but there is a hatred there now that was not there in the early 80s.

I would like to see a return to friendly rivalry on Merseyside, and yes the sectarian point scoring must be binned.

It is still interesting to discuss the history as long as we do it in a balanced factual manner.

I am Scottish and was brought up a Rangers fan, when I went with a mate to the FA cup final in 1985 there were a few Irish Tricolours and Red Hand of Ulster / King Billy flags in the Everton end, but not many.

21st Century, time to move on.

Everton / Ayr United ;-)

Never mind the religion. Rangers fans are as deluded as the Kopites. Anybody who is a fan of Walter Smith then God help them!!!! I can remember sitting there totally uninspired during his reign week in week out. He was more than clueless - I remember losing 3 - 0 at home to Ipswich and walking out and being close to throwing my season ticket on the pitch. Don't even get me started on the Tranmere fiasco. I absolutely loathed him - anybody who moans about Moyes has a very very short memory IMO. Couldn't give a ****e about either of them in reality, but guys on here saying that they have a soft spot for Rangers because of Jela / Naismith doesn't wash with me - there is something inside me that will always partly dislike them because of woeful Walter.

I lived in Glasgow in the mid-90s & that put me off supporting either Celtic or Rangers. Partly it's the sectarianism, partly the media acting as their PR agents and partly the number of fans from outside the city who support them. When I was asked who I supported in Scotland I always replied Albion Rovers which seemed to shut them up.

I see no reason why the Merseyside & Glasgow clubs should have any sort of connection. I know that Scousers are generally well-received up there but that's as far as it goes for me.

sectarianism can blow me!................ who the [Poor language removed] is fanning those flames?................. i like it when celtic and hibs win

I don't know how true this is?

St Domingos was a methodist parish, and therefore protestant in its ethos.

Other than a relatively new song, and a few bobble hats, is there any real evidence that Everton has been in any way associated with Celtic, Rangers, catholics or protestants?

The general consensus is that nobody has ever been arsed enough to give enough of a shit about all that bollocks.

There's no doubting that there was sectarian violence in Liverpool within the first half of the 20th century, but I've found little evidence to suggest that a dichotomy was created between Everton and Liverpool in this regard.

If there was then I stand to be corrected.

Can you give a historical meaning for the phrases, protestant and catholic to the ignorant amongst us too please?

Personally I always liked Celtic when they were underdogs to Rangers but now I have a soft spot for Rangers due to them being the underdogs and the Smith connection,.

Remember the 70s you'd get the names of both clubs chanted in response to each other by scallys in the Gwladys st - if you were catholic you chanted celtic if protestant Rangers - it was as unthinking as that.

When I first heard it I had to ask my mate what it was about, I'm sure it died away pretty quick as Northern Ireland and the sectarian troubles became a regular feature on the news. Soldiers and civilians getting killed on a regular basis and bombings in mainland england showed it up for the tw@ttery it was.

IMO Celtic fans are opportunist glory hunters hence the present "apparent" relationship with Utd and Liverpool - coincidently the most successful jacket potatoes in english football.

I'm catholic so by the logic of the unthinking I should align with celtic but I don't, if anything I want Rangers to win the old firm games - cos they play in blue !!!
