Glasgow/Merseyside?

As to the OP: Everton have zero connection with either Glasgow club. Zero. And the religious connections - such as they were - are now distant memories, of interest only to knuckle dragging elements in Glasgow and their ilk in 'norn iron'.

This - I don't care about any other clubs, it's Everton, and Everton only.

Not bothered what religion our chairman was in 1927, not bothered what religion players have been that have played for us, don't care if some fans prefer Celtic or Rangers, I simply do not care, all I care about is Everton.

No offense to the original post, u seem sound, but i'm not arsed about connections or links with Glasgow, there isn't any as far as i'm concerned

Families and schools in Liverpool are sold as being split Blue or Red, I'm not aware of many families or schools being split by religion.

It therefore follows that we have fans who like both. I just find the Celtic Evertonians shout louder about it more than the Rangers ones. I personally lean towards Rangers.....Remember our Fathers brave and bold who fought down County Road in times gone by!

Re To Hell with Liverppol and Rangers too. This was wrote in 1963 with reference to the British Championship match. The song is actually took Rangers' 'Copland Road' song. I wouldn't look into the lyrics any more than 'We hate Nottingham Forest', I personally don't hate Forest and don't know any other Blue who hates them neither.

Ha that Forest thing makes me laugh too. You would have thought people would change it to Tottenham Hotspur maybe as it'd still scan. And well, most people do.

It may have meant something to first or second generation Irish migrants, of which most us descend from, but it means jack to us all today IMO.

I only support Everton. The notion of supporting 2 clubs is completely irrational to me. Probably to most of the lads on here too who spend all day, every day discussing every minutae of club business and then the weekend watching the game.

I don't really see many similarities with either Glasgow club either. We've traded loads of players with Man Utd lately. I don't keep an eye out for them.

Welcome to GOT though, always good to get a different view on things.

Didn't know that.

I do know we don't entertain any sectarian bull****.

I loathe the Old Firm, personally. My feelings at the demise of Rangers were "One down...".

couldn't care less about Rangers or celtic even if celtic went down to division 3 to join them
all i care about is 3 points again newcastle and a cup win over leeds will do me (y)

From an historic and sociological point the OP has raised an interesting question and deserves a considered response.

Those who are not interested should simply ignore the thread.

The events occurring in the city of Liverpool from about the 1850s through to the clearance of the slums around Scotland Road and Kirkdale etc in the 50s/60s are very interesting to those of us who have an interest in these matters.

However this does not mean that, in 2012, those who wish to perpetuate centuries old sectarian conflict should be allowed to do so, particularly in the guise of support for a football club.

Please let those of us who are interested enjoy a reasoned discussion on the historical matters. It is not about point scoring etc as all recent census/survey figues demonsrate that church attendance across all denominations is at a very low ebb, so it is not a theological debate. (Dare I say, the level of church attendance is on its knees !! )

i stay in stirling and have always wondered about this too, celtic and liverpool seem to love each other but when they played each other a few years ago there was a lot of fighting. anyway i'm not arsed either way.

i'm at ibrox a week on tuesday though pal watching my local team from growing up queen of the south, v rangers if u want a pint and talk everton

Maybe. But I always think that it's a dangerous game when football identity becomes wrapped up in the minds of some with religious and ethnic identity. I can see how it would in Scotland and NI, but it's a stretch to say that clubs in England have any reason to do so.

Anecdotal evidence from people leaving memories in books etc tends to suggest a lot of Irish Catholics in Liverpool took Everton up as their club. Why they did that we dont precisely know, beyond partial explanations about signing Irish players and the Protestantism of Liverpool's boardroom etc.

This issue always causes murder on forums.

I'm in Cambus next week lid, but think I'm hooked up.

...of course, many Evertonians know that god doesn't exist. Accordingly, they support Hibs.

is the right answer, Hibs for me as well, only because i went up there and it had Hibs and everton painted on a wall, and later on a few of there lads used to come down in the 80,s for some of the more interesting games, dont give a ****e about religion in footy and i think 99% of everton fans feel the same way.

Loads of Orangemen have EFC tattoos. St Domingo was Methodist and the main crux of the Everton/Anfield area was Protestant with Scottie Road/Vauxhall area inhabited by "left footers".

I don't think there has ever been a Protestant/Catholic divide between EFC and the Red****e - only the chosen v the outsiders.

The whole Religious divide was dead years and years ago. I went to a Catholic boys school in the sixties/seventies and we used to play Liverpool vs everton in the school yard as it was about a 50/50 split.

Football and religion don't mix well as Religion finds it hard playing second fiddle.
