i cant stand either but i despise celtic because of there disrespect for british soldiers and the rememberance sunday incident, and the ira **** that is commonly sung amongst the celtic support.

yes i know rangers fans arent whiter than white either.

Was just thinking this, it's gone heavily off subject

I agree, it was started to discuss the links between the Glaswegian clubs and the Merseyside clubs, yet now we're sitting here solely discussing the OF's faults. I say we draw a line under the debate about the OF and get back to the original point, please :)

This! End of the day, there's no real link between either Merseyside and Glasgow club although it would probably be celtic everton, Liverpool rangers. But now no one really gives a **** about it anymore, you support everton or Liverpool and then have one preferred team out of rangers and celtic or you just don't give a [Poor language removed]!
Me personally I like both, if it came down to it with my Irish background and being catholic it's celtic. But I don't religiously hate rangers or hate them at all actually, proper football club and respect to the 49,000 fans that turn up for a Scottish division 3 league game, credit where credits due, they're some loyal supporters and I respect that

I don't mind either team tbh, i liked Celtic more as a kid cause a family moved onto my estate from Glasgow and they had a lad who was my age and we ended up being mates, he used to come to ours to watch the Everton games and i used to watch the Celtic games at his, plus they had Henrik Larsson at the time and i can remember thinking he was boss. The lads an Evertonian now like i had a season ticket with him a few years back, can't say i've been to watch Celtic though.

That said like Rangers have sorted us some gems over the years so i'm nay bothered.

Used to prefer Celtic but I'm not arsed now. If you've been chosen by Everton (even as your second club) You're just fortunate like the rest of us.

This is a good read.

There is a also a very good academic paper written by a bloke from Leeds University on the history of the split. It was not a simple Cathoilc v Protetsant thing at all.

Houlding and McKenna group - Orange, Freemasons, Tory, anti-Irish Home Rule, Brewer and Publican, Anglican

Mahon and group - Liberal, Pro-Irish Home Rule, Pro-Temperance, Non-Conformists (mostly Methodists)

Everton had a Catholic Chairman at the beginning of the 20th century - Baxter

In the 50s, the large number of Irish players at Goodison compared to none at Anfield, atrrcated the support of the Catholic Irish especially the Scottie Road residents. Their sympathies in Glasgow would of course be towards Celtic.

Anyway, we all get along just grand now !

Like everyone else I remember the half Everton/Celtic bobbles but I certainly think everton have got closer to rangers over recent years & religion aside like someone earlier in the thread the poppy/Rembrance Sunday stuff certainly pushed me that way.

I grew up thinking the catholic - Everton & the opposite with Liverpool but as you grow older you get to know lads of both religions who follow both clubs and I genuinely think it has no substance nor any place in this city (thankfully).

It's interesting to read people's thoughts on the spread of fans throughout the city as I agree I've found much of south Liverpool mainly red although Garson & Speke have always been seen as 'blue' to me and for some reason a lot of blues from Huyton as well.

The south end of Liverpool has always struck me as a desert as far as blues go. Obviously there'll be thousands of them, but in proportion not so many as the north end. During the Kirkby debacle the transport team Tesco/Everton brought in did a season ticket map (had it on me old pc and cant find it online now) that represented the addresses of fans: the core area was heavily skewed toward the north end and places in the outer suburbs like Kirkby, Huyton etc. Sort of visually confirmed Everton's north end identity.

As to the OP: Everton have zero connection with either Glasgow club. Zero. And the religious connections - such as they were - are now distant memories, of interest only to knuckle dragging elements in Glasgow and their ilk in 'norn iron'.

You cant half tell kipper's still down cant you?

Formerly Dundee Hibernian !! Yes there was a sectarian history in Dundee at one time too with Dundee attracting the Protestant support.

Formerly and was being the significant words here. Something that died out decades ago.

There is absolutely NO religious affiliation with either Dundee club, unlike the poisoned bigotry of Glasgow and to a lesser extent, Edinburgh.

Families and schools in Liverpool are sold as being split Blue or Red, I'm not aware of many families or schools being split by religion.

It therefore follows that we have fans who like both. I just find the Celtic Evertonians shout louder about it more than the Rangers ones. I personally lean towards Rangers.....Remember our Fathers brave and bold who fought down County Road in times gone by!

Re To Hell with Liverppol and Rangers too. This was wrote in 1963 with reference to the British Championship match. The song is actually took Rangers' 'Copland Road' song. I wouldn't look into the lyrics any more than 'We hate Nottingham Forest', I personally don't hate Forest and don't know any other Blue who hates them neither.
