Gerrard to leave LFC...

I posited that he was a fading influence on them and that for the past 4-5 seasons his main strength has been to preserve himself for late on in the game (others doing the fetching and carrying). I realise stats can make things look odd but Soccerbase tells me that his 119 league goals (many penalties among them) have only earned the RS an extra 65 points and the main season his goals had an impact in the PL was 2004-05 when his goals earned 6 pts and 4 places to finish behind Everton in 5th place (of course we know all about the cup goals). A lot of his goals, Derby matches apart, may well have been key to their getting a result but were often single goals in 2 goal plus wins.

Tim Cahill - the nearest we had in the same period to a key impact player managed 59 league goals and they were worth 38 points including 10 points in 2008-09 for his 9 goals.

Gerrard 17 seasons: 119 goals (lots of penalties) 65 points (1998-2015)
Cahill 8 seasons: 59 goals (no penalties) 38 points (2004-12)

I haven't read the reams of nauseating coverage today and have absolutely no intention of doing so, but it is my understanding that the RS offered him a new one year deal, which he turned down in disgust at having to accept a pay cut. Oh, what a role model he is.

Friday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing the boot room door
Leaving the note that he hoped would say more
He goes downstairs past the Anfield sign clutching his captain’s band
Quietly leaving the legacy
Stepping outside on a free

Stevie (He gave us most of his life)
Is leaving (Sacrificed most of his life)
Home (He gave us everything money can’t buy)
He's leaving home up on Anfield Road
For so many years (Bye bye)

More like he wants to double his money in America cos Fenway sports tried to half his salary on his new contract, that's how loyal they are pffft ha ha

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My fans I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain

I've lived a life that's full
I traveled home with stevie heighway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets I've had a few
But then again too many to mention
I did what I had to do
And threw the title without exemption

I planned each charted course
Each careful slip along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes there were times I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was Ba
I slipped on up and passed the ball, I looked a prat
And I stood small and did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it my way

For what is a man what has he got
If not a title then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

Yes it was my way

A lot of our ire towards Gerrard is the fauning that surrounds him, but let nobody doubt how important he has been for the Viet Cong all these years. The Echo must be delighted with the news, they can run at least one extra special supplement now.

And the Margate Messenger and the Southend Star.

A lad I work with just put this on Facebook:

Sad to hear, but probably is the right time, Hope he goes to Real Madrid or Barcelona and wins aload of medals. He deserves it

Yes mate I bet they are scrapping it out to sign him

Glad he held his place long enough to give us "the slip" and Crystanbul.

He'll go down in history as a nearly man while his contemporaries won everything he did and more.

Fools in the media talking about him being their greatest ever player. He up for 3rd but competing with multiple league winners and a ballon d'or winner. Carragher spouting balls about some of their best players playing together so they looked better because the team was stronger. Absolute tosh. Gerrard doesn't get bonus marks for being part of gash squads.
