I posited that he was a fading influence on them and that for the past 4-5 seasons his main strength has been to preserve himself for late on in the game (others doing the fetching and carrying). I realise stats can make things look odd but Soccerbase tells me that his 119 league goals (many penalties among them) have only earned the RS an extra 65 points and the main season his goals had an impact in the PL was 2004-05 when his goals earned 6 pts and 4 places to finish behind Everton in 5th place (of course we know all about the cup goals). A lot of his goals, Derby matches apart, may well have been key to their getting a result but were often single goals in 2 goal plus wins.
Tim Cahill - the nearest we had in the same period to a key impact player managed 59 league goals and they were worth 38 points including 10 points in 2008-09 for his 9 goals.
Gerrard 17 seasons: 119 goals (lots of penalties) 65 points (1998-2015)
Cahill 8 seasons: 59 goals (no penalties) 38 points (2004-12)
