Gerard Deulofeu

We have more cover for Deulofeu too with Bolasie, Lennon and Mirallas able to play there.

He is a squad player for me right now and a very useful one as he can cause damage when he plays well. I dont see any major issue with bringing him on for the last 30 minutes etc.

Obviously it would be nice if we could get him playing consistently all the time but that's wingers for you. I'd say the only consistent winger we have got is Lennon but his ceiling isnt as high as the others.

Why, does he live here?

He was very frustrating the other night, things didnt seem to work for him but he was still involved, didnt hide from the ball and still continued to look for killer passes. The ball he put through to Funes Mori when he shot into the side netting was a good one. His crossing was pants but I think the majority of the time Bolasie has crossed this season he has hit the first man too. The lad had a bad game but because he has competition he can be hooked off and not seen from again. I was more disappointed in Barkley because he seems to have lost his confidence (other than a few times against Boro) to play defence splitting balls and I think he is hiding. Geri always shows for the ball and there is a reason we paid 4mill for him and he isnt still at Barca, he will have days like Tuesday. Also people moaning about his finishing - he can finish because he scores buckets for Spain and although it was wayward on Tuesday I would much rather him hit a ball first time rather than taking a touch like Ross did when he should of just put his laces through it.
The lad is obscenely gifted, his potential is the highest of everyone in the squad and he needs to be nurtured. Koeman I think does rate him but has more consistent options currently which he is sticking with. Its up to Geri to play his way back in and he will do so.

I have always believed there are three types of player, the gifted, the worker and the gifted worker. We need say no more about those who have a gift and work hard at it. We then have the Naismiths of this world who have been given a little ability but who work to maximise that ability. The gifted are the biggest conundrum, they have it but don't have the ability to produce. I seems simple to say to them that you have been given a gift that most of us can only dream of so just go and do it. Unfortunately the ability to produce is as important as the talent. Del needs to show that he isn't just potential but has end product.

Given that his end product was to have one of the highest assists compared to minutes on the pitch with both us and Sevilla then I don't think that's an issue.

If you are talking about scoring. Do you want him to play in goal also. Maybe hand out the pork pies. If he's working hard and creating for the player who puts the ball in the net then that's enough. Goals would be a bonus but I just can't ever see him being prolific. Even at Barca B if you take a look most of his goals while he hit the target they weren't great finishes but more bad goal keeping.

The stats I looked at said he played 26 games last season, scored 2 with 8 assists. A goal or an assist every 2.6 games.
As important as stats are they don't tell the whole story, if he has 10 runs at a defence and losses the ball 9 times and puts the team under pressure or costs a goal then I believe the is not product. His contribution has to be an overall positive. I am of the opinion that if a player scores a goal in every three games but costs the team a goal every three games then his overall contribution is nil.
I think that his skill levels are such that he can deliver much more than he has, a bit like Barkley,. He might be suffering because the expectation level is such that when he plays an average game people are disappointed. I believe he can be a special player but at 22 it is time for that special player to come to the fore.

How many errors have lead to goals? They have stats for tha too.

Looking at stats per game is not a great stat. Much better is the stats per 90 mins.

I'm not really sure why he gets a harder time than others. I watched a show about joe Cole the other night and when he as at West Ham it was the same for him. This applies to Barkley just as much. We shouldn't run them out of the club just because their young and inconsistent.

I don't know about a harder time than others, I believe he is very good and I want him to be as good as he can be. I don't want him to settle for being good I want him to be brilliant. I certainly wouldn't want him out of the club.

He does. Lennon had the best chance in the whole game and blasted towards a defender with the GK was nowhere and no one mentioned it. Apart from his purple patch Lennnon didn't contribute much yet was never dropped

Obviously a talent but why would you mess
with the squad that's been getting results
[yes the cup was an exception and changes anyway]
