This stuff is truly terrifying. We've been dumbing down public schools/educational standards for decades.
This is the path to idiocracy

thats paywalled for me,
what's the gist of the plan here.
Texas lawmakers want to give $8k to every kid home schooled or in private school?
Is that per year or a one off, either way, what???
I thought the GOP hated vouchers?
Imagine the amount of idiot parents who'd take their 3 kids out of school and pocket $24k...

We have a better chance of winning the league this season than Scalise has of getting to 217 right now. Jordan can't get there either.

I see a deadlocked Republican conference as having two options. They can collectively agree to let Patrick McHenry run the show with the interim tag, where it only takes a few defectors to check him on any given issue, or they can start engaging in political assassinations (of the career variety). They could leverage Democratic votes to expel members, starting with Gaetz, and partner with Republican governors to replace them with saner politicians until the rest get the picture.

One option seems a lot more likely to happen than the other.
Aye, Scalise has more members against him than McCarthy did (although ironically Gaetz says he will vote for him)

Not sure if anything will come of this

The tweet is a bit misleading. They're proposing setting aside $500 million to pay for the next two years. If demand exceeds supply, there's a pecking order where most of it goes to low-income families and children with disabilities. Not that it will end up with the low income families, because costs almost certainly exceed $8k per year.

It would be administered through education savings accounts where the parents would have to account for the expenses, so they couldn't just take kids out and pocket the money. I can imagine ways to abuse those accounts, though.

It would be hard, because the House has so many safe seats where the incumbents are running against primary challenges from their party's extreme, and not the general election.

If you look at DW-Nominate over the decades, the plots of House and Senate voting records don't look all that different. What was different in decades gone by was that members could lose their seats to the other side. Almost every Senate seat was competitive, and a much larger share of House seats were. The members were still bunkered up in their ideological camps most of the time, but they understood that they had to cooperate and get stuff done to retain their seats.

Intransigence is a better electoral strategy for a large proportion of the members, these days.

The only thing saving Texas from this fate over the last several years is a coalition of urban Dems and rural Reps in the state lege who, despite their massive differences on most matters, see this for what it is.
