Looks like he is going to try

As you say the primaries will be very tough

He'll do alright in NH (hey the repubs are gettin sane again!) and just obliterated everywhere else. His wife will be North Korean by the South Carolina primaries (tho hey, that might play well w/ the repub voters)

Trump didn't quite 'split'...in the UK constituency manner...the GOP vote, I know it doesn't work like that.
What he did was alienate enough of the floating voters to turn the red wave into a ripple in a toddler's paddling pool.

When do the potential Republican candidates have to declare?

For President? If that’s what you meant, probably by sometime early next summer, with primaries beginning in the fall as I remember it. I’m pretty sure it was June when Trump formally joined the race in 2015.

Trump has too much ego to step aside and play the Statesman/King or Queen maker role.

But there will be a few thinking do I go now(summer) or wait for 2028

As a non-American I haven’t really been following these mid-terms, but what do the current results suggest the USA will have as president in two years time? A Giant Douche, or a Turd Sandwich?
